I've searched and can't seem to find the answer I need. I broke down and bought a ferrett timing box and now have a couple of questions. First one is, is the number one injector the front injector on the drivers side? And number two what do I time it to I have the mark on the balancer but is the bracket in the picture what I time it to. The upper edge, lower edge, the round holes?
Also when checking the timing with the light the mark isn't steady it jumps around like when you have a bad distributer on a gasser, is this normal or an indication that the IP is trash?

Thanks

I have the same problem with my ferret time to time. Also you want to use the front injector line on passenger side. I have to move the adapter around on the injector line till I find a spot it is not erratic. Also try a new 9 volt battery, Seems to help. On the bracket there is a hole with a 0 in front of it. That is the one I used for my timing light. I adjusted my light to 8-9 degrees and move the ip till the light lines up with the mark. Make sure the engine is shut off before you move your ip. Hope this helps

Thanks I guess if I get on the correct injector line it will be easier to time. I'll have to take a closer look for the 0 to line it up with, do you just use the center line of the hole as the timing mark?

Yea just use the center line. If you find out a way to get rid of the erratic pulse let me know. I'm not sure what causes it, I just keep playing around till I get it working. You will have to get rid of your paint on your injector line to get it to work. I just took some sandpaper and sanded off about 2" area to use. Good luck.

Thats the timing tab in the picture. The zero line is the short tower on the tab. Look closely at it and feel the printed line in the tab. The tall tower is for a timing meter probe.

I found the timing mark, if you hadn't told me where to look I'd would never have seen it since it's so faint. The pulses are holding steady with the clamp next to the bend of the number one injector. At idle it's at about 2deg now I just need a buddy to come over and hold the throttle at 2000 to see where it's at. By revving it under the hood and looking at the mark it doesn't seem to be advancing as it should. I may be in the market for a Baby Moose IP in the very near future.

The factory timing spec is 8.5 deg btdc, but with the new ULSD, you will do better to advance that to about 9.7 deg btdc and your engine will recover the power and fuel mileage lost when the fuel was changed.

Sometimes when the light jumps around and it can't be solved by moving the clamp around, it' s either a bum pump or a slobbering injector. An injector can be ruled out by trying other injectors, but if it does it on all of them, then it's the pump ( like a certain fresh pump from Pensacola that a friend of mine has :backoff

My pump timing does not change at all with rpm's either. Mel told me the problem but I forget what he said it was now. Truck runs fine so I havn't messed with it so far. I have two spare used pumps that I need to send to mel when funds are available.
