That might have worked, but the problem is the auto industry is so heavily regulated that only the big established companies can survive the red tape. They have to be so big that they become "too big to fail".
Yes, they learned from their mistakes. They learned that even if you never buy their product that they can still get their hands on your money through tax funded bailouts.
I think half of us here would love to build REAL trucks with REAL engines the way we know they should be. But the cost to test something as pathetic as a seat belt tie down is impossible to over come. Now you are dealing with variable deployment air bags, tailpipe emissions that you have to actually be able to breath in without getting sick, and it becomes a crap shoot with no way out.
If I really wanted to, I could almost afford to buy a new truck but for the above reasons alone, I will never do that.

NAFTA????? yeah right! I often source parts from the states and am always slapped with brokerage fees right at the border. Whats funny is the government duties on chinese imports are in fact less (yes, i order crap from china too).
Why do I order from the states, china, EU, and rarely Au? Because some stuff can't be found in canada or they are so full of it that they won't even return my calls, which is why I do believe in globalization. Without competition, there is no reason to compete and improve ourselves. Those that won't adapt deserve to fail. Period.
