alternator question

Hi,

I am new to this forum and new to diesel trucks also. I bought my first one, a 1989 Ford F350, that originally had a 7.3L in it, and was changed over to a 6.9L. I was driving it last week and noticed that the battery icon on the dash was blinking on and off, so when I got home I threw a tester on it which basically told me the alternator was bad. Before I bothered to look in my shop manual I put in a bid for one on e-bay which I won, that has the internal voltage regulator, and as it turns out I have the other type in my truck, with an external voltage regulator.
My question is... can can one be swapped out for the other in a case like this?

You may have gotten yourself a 3G. Take a look at our tech articles. I believe there is an upgrade article there.

Welcome to the forum. The easy answer is yes it will work but some wireing needs to be changed. Its really easy to make the changes too. Also the alternater must fit the same location and the wire connections should be clocked at the correct location. Is this a DB Electrical product...

thanks for the replies. It is a Motorcraft GL520RM, rebuilt alternator I got on eBay... the price seemed right but hopefully I wont pay extra in the form of *aggravation*
