I just removed the original 1985 large-case 1G that came on my old 6.9 and got transplanted onto the Cummins; it has many hundreds of thousands of miles on it.
I did not experience any low voltage readings at low engine speeds; that old 1G always put out a little over 14-volts, regardless of engine speed, voltage shown on the dash-mounted gauge and often verified with a multi-meter.
It was still going strong when I removed it; I just replaced it with a big 110-555 Leece-Neville.
I don't know just how much longer the old 1G was gonna last; when I spin the pulley it sounds like a playing-card hitting bicycle spokes.
I don't think there are any rollers left on the bearings.
