I've been asking myself the same question, probably because your looking for an intercooler too. LOL

I've been looking for 700 to 900 CFM units. I think they are in our range.

find out what the ATS and the Hypermax IC's are rated for and that should be a good starting point for the guesswork:D

The basic calculation is:

CFM = RPM x CID x Volumetric Efficency
_______________3456

The volumetric efficiency is generally considered as follows for 4 cycle diesel engines:

Normally Aspirated = .85
Turbocharged = 1.6
Turbocharged and Aftercooled = 1.85

Now I need to get out the vacuum to clean up the dust after pulling that book out LOL

only difference is I have no plan to use an air to air intercooler

You wouldn't be thinking liquid aftercooler by any chance :cool
Always wondered why I haven't seen those anymore. They worked great on the old Cats.

Nice forumula! According to that, the biggest you would need is around 750 CFM.

My cousin is looking to get an intercooler for his banks turboed 7.3. However the only place i found that offered one was hypermax. Where else would I be able to get one?

In that calculation you displayed what is CFM and CID.

the max effecience an air to air exchanger can ever do is 85%

a water to air exchanger however can do 100 %

while water to air may achive 100% efficiently ambient air temps are always lower than engine coolent temps.

Thats true, but a good air to water intercooler uses its own seperate cooling system most times filled with ice water, so charge air passes through a 32* cooler before it makes it to the engine.

no ice water chilled intercoolers are used out here in the real world.......

I have yet to see a OEM truck or equipment engine with one installed.

I run a temp senser in my air horn just b4 combustion so I can effectivly adjust my ram air............I can tell you that when the charge air reaches 130* this is when my EGT's become boderline at 1300*f........its all downhill from there

OH I might add that the air to air cooler is very effecient up to about 120*f and the only time I can get past that is under heavy load and mountain passes at 8-9k elevations
