R134 will become R1234yf in another year or two. The larger the number the more planet "friendly" it is. R12 breaks down in 150 years, R134 in 13 years and the new R1234yf in a week or two. The new stuff always comes out as the patents expire!

And 134 is less effective than 12, than 502, than ammonia. Still it's the safest. But it requires a whole new curve when it comes to setting up superheat, etc... I've been doing this a long enough time, and if the cans of 134 were available in the stores than you can work on your own "depleted" system without a special license. But you always need to evacuate the system unless you live in a vacuum and there is NO chance of any moisture in the system to screw things up.

Anyway the original question was on the oil. Clean out your condenser, evaporator, and lines while replacing the accumulator and add the oil. Vac the system down for a while to the lowest reading you can (depending on altitude) and check it's integrity by letting sit on the gauges for a while. Then, you can replace the refrigerant.

Oh, then take your readings for pressure, superheat, etc... and determine if more or less refrigerant is needed in system.

I need to install my new a/c compressor tomorrow morning and have to add the pag oil to it. My truck was already converted to 134 and someone marked the new measurements and the amount of pag oil on the accumulator, kind of a nice touch for future service.
My question is, the instructions on the compressor say to add 4oz of pag oil to the compressor but on my accumulator, someone marked that they used 8oz in my system when the conversion was done.
So what do I do? Just add the 4oz and be done?

Not an expert, but have done a few. Disconnect the old compressor, then drain it into a measuring cup. Let it drain for a while. Pour the same amount of NEW oil into the new compressor. Reinstall, vacuum, etc.

I've changed many clutches over the years, this one was so far gone, that it tried to weld itself to the compressor. It's been fixed and running great for a few weeks now.
I dont think your link would help me too much anyway, as I'm all the way in Las Vegas. Lol

I would bet that more refrigerant is released into the air because of auto accidents than the DIY'ers. Just food for thought.

Good luck with the AC service. Do try to reclaim it though! I know some shops will even give you credit for the refrigerent based on the amount they reclaim.

Wouldn't quite make since to just bust open a full system anyways.
Maybe a bad sensor or compressor.
But most are repairing leaky components, in which most of the refrigerant is gone anyways.

On many Gm dryers is a switch to shut down the pump if the pressure drops low. You can replace that switch anytime you want and not loose freon. That fitting has a schrader valve in it. Not so on most Hondas. I found out the hard way once thinking I could change that switch and save the freon.
