94 IDI E4OD TRANS QUESTION

I am installing a trans temp guage where is the best place to install the temp sensor. I herd the best place is the 5/16 line out of the trans to the trans cooler not the return line. Do any of you know witch line is the hot line the one at the rear or the one at the front of the tranny. or i could install it on the driver side above the pan there is a spot for a guage. last what would be a safe temp to stay when towing.
