hello all my friend bought a 91 f250 ext cab 4x4 with a e4od 900 bucks .....

here is the major issue
shifting trouble
once warm reverse doesnt work until you rev it up a bit

1-2 shift is hard
under hard accel leaks trans fluid

and lastly the shift indictor on colum is off as well as it says 4x4 is always on except in tcase neutral postion

i know alot of stuff ...

im replacing the vss & neutral safety switch tonight the tach works and the od light works properly as well
thanks for future insight .... im glad my truck has a zf5

Uh oh....that sounds like the pump is going out(with the lack of reverse) which means, it's not long for this world. Shifting issues can also be caused by an out of range TPS as well.

This is a little more than a filter issue. What dose the fluid look like? Best thing to do is drop the pan. Take a look see if there is any carnage in it. If you can pressure test it. Most likely the tranny is tired. Time for a rebuild.

Check for the old O ring in the pump. Most of the time if the filter falls out, the old O ring is still in the pump. The incorrect filter (4X2) will fall out if used too.

Majority of the E4OD's didn't use the band aid clips on the filter. Good chance that tranny didn't have them. That's why they didn't put them on.:D

ya after i posted that i did some research and ya the old o ring was in the pump ...
so my question is... is this going to happen again i know they make clips but cant find them locally also so ppl put 99 super duty pans on them for added cooling and those pans have perches to hold the filter

Lube the new O ring and press the filter firmly in place. You will feel it seat. The filter will be fine. I use the 4R100 pan in place of the early pan. Dumping the fluid out of the early part sucks. Besides the 4R100 pan has a better rail design and uses a re usable gasket. No leaks with this sucker.
