86 f250 engine temp light.

Well today I was gonna fix my powersteering pump so I had to wash it.took it to the gas station and pressure washed the crap out of it.drove it around for awhile and found the leak but the parts store is closed.well I headed to the house and about a mile from the house my temp light came on.the one below the glow plug light.anyway my temp guage was reading perfect so I just kept goin cause there was nothin I could really do at that point.what could cause this.seems like last time I pressure washed the engine it did this but I don't know how dad fixed it.id like to be able to fix it real quick if possible.

Unplug it and replace it with a mechanical gauge?

Well I mean I'm not worried about the light really I just wanna make sure somethin else isn't coming on when that light comes on

It won't hurt it if the lights on but the temp guage reads normal will it

Check the wire at the sensor, it's on drivers side front of head, lower one, upper one
is over temp sensor.

Only thing I might be worried about is an inaccurate temp gauge. But I would suspect the light before the gauge

I trust my guage a lot more then the light cause when my lower rad hose busted my temp guage told me it was hot my light never came on

Ya I just drove it and it's been sitting for and hour and was stone cold and the light came on.i even unplugged it and plugged it back in from the sensor

On kater model trucks the idea is the large sender found in the drivers side front of the head is a grounding circut. When the coolnt tep reaches 242 degrees it will close internally grounding the dash gauge. That in turn sends the pointer way past the "L" in the word NORMAL.. Really bad idea. The check engine lite also comes on. So my guess is you got a sender wet and its grounded. Just run the rig till it warms up and drys out the ground. Or remove the wire to the sender and wash it with WD40. That makes water and grounding disappear. WD40 means water displacement 40. It was the 40th formula that finally worked. The oil in it is fish oil but I don't recall what find of fish. On trucks my age 1989 to test the over temp sender on a warm or cold engine remove the wire from the sender I spoke of and ground it. The dash gauge will run all the way across to the L telling you its hot. Then you can see if its ok or needs replacing. Either replace a bad sender of leave off the wire.

Ok that's what happend then is when I washed it i got water in there.i just wanted to make sure it wasn't gonna hurt it. I mean hell you'd think when my hose busted and It got hot it woulda came on but it didn't
