7.3L IDI conversion.. can i start it without a tranny behind it?

Getting ready to drop a 7.3L Diesel that i bought for $100.00 into a 92 Ford F-150. I have not gotten a tranny yet, but will probablygo with a C6 to replace the AOD currently in the truck behind the blown 4.9L. Can i start the motor before installing a tranny when i hook up the motor mounts?? If the motor is not going to run, I do not want to wast money buying a tranny.

Some of you may be asking why?... well why not? I will have around $500 in a 92 Single Cab with a diesel motor needing a tranny in it Hey... my little bro does need a truck lol.

Well, I won't say no...but without a trans to fit the starter into...and bolt to not sure it's a great idea...I suppose you could just bolt the starter to the adapter plate, and then it may work....I wouldn't suggest it though.

I bought an 86 missin the 4spd tranny for the motor one time and i knew i started it while sitting in the driveway, but wasnt sure this could be done witht he automatic.. was thinking i was able to because of the bellhousing on the motor... I may just buy a running 86 and putting all the 92 body parts on it... The 86 body is trashed.

Hell yea you can start it without a trans. The starter bolts to the adapter plate, as long as you've got that you're golden. Get her done son!

Yup! When i had my transmission out of my truck a few weeks ago, i fired the motor up while the boys pushed me out of the shop so i;d have power steering.

If you put a tranny in the truck, he/she might be expect something then just a drive around the block

Its as posted above. The starter bolts to the trans adapter plate. You will need a flexplate with the starter gear on it too. The bolts for the flexplate to crank is 47 lbs torque and.... You must use a thread sealant on all those crank bolts. They are drilled all the way thru the crank flange into the oily pan side. Oil will leak out past the tight bolt threads. Severl members here have found that out. Some have even sheared off all the bolts on the auto and standard trans flywheels to so the torque is important. I use blue loctite on these threads because its does two things. It seals the threads and it locks the bolts from ever loosening up accidently.

Wanna say GO FOR IT, though I'm actually a total wimp for still not getting to my head gaskets. I know, guys, sooner the better on that project.

OK, will be pulling the heads from my 2nd engine by mid-month and get 'em to the head shop... and OUT comes the engine before summer's over.

Many thanx for the inspiration, fellas. Can't REALLY have any fun with my van until the heads are sealed.
