I am new here and new to the diesel engine craze.
My current rockcrawler hauler is an 89 gmc suburban 350/350 3/4 ton 4:10 gears. Out behind my shop I have a 95 7.3 turbodiesel with 5 speed tranny and xfer case. I know the history of the 7.3 and it is a good motor.
Do you see where this is going?
After thinking about it for a few days this is what I have come up with.
-Swap in the motor and tranny.
-Ditch the xfer case and put in a divorced 205 w passenger drop(that way I can keep the chevy axle and steering etc)
-build a heavier springpack upfront for the heavy motor
Other considerations:
I do have a 3 speed brownie box that I could put in front of the xfer case(then I would have 4 driveshafts).
I don't know if I need a dedicated 2 wheel drive tranny or if the 4 wd one will work.
The usual custom drive shafts etc.
I own both a mig and tig machine, as well as plasma cutter, full shop etc. Custom fab is not a problem.
Do you know of anybody that has done this swap?
Please give me all the reasons why I should not do this. I want to know what I am up against.
The vehicle will need to cruise all day at freeway speeds..........I need it to be reliable. I have plenty of other vehicles...............so I can take my time and do it right.
