7.3 idi hard starting

Hey fellas I'm new to this but heres what i got going on.

I got this truck recently f250 93 7.3 idi. Has trouble with hard starting.

I got a high torque starter, put that on.

Sent off the injectors to be rebuilt from a reputable source

Got Glow plugs ford oem

Got a upgraded fuel lines replaced the plastic ones with the stainless ones from that fella on ebay who makes them

I got a heater fuel delete kit solid aluminum with a upgraded wix filter.

Im pulling the radiator to have it serviced and or re-cored.


What else am I missing. I want it to start right up. What about other fuel lines, any one know the part numbers on them and were to get plus any other recomendations

Try starting fluid if it starts right up, probably something wrong with your glow plug system. If you bought your glow plugs from eBay or Amazon they are probably fakes.

My first guess would be air leaking into the fuel line. This will cause a very hard start first start of the day. You have done almost everything needed to assure a good start BUT the fuel lines. Check every injector line and the fuel line to the injector pump (HPOP). Best of luck.

Another vote for air intrusion - Ive got air intrusion in the fuel lines I havent had time to track down and fix (Probably injector O rings in my case). Hard start after sitting, even just overnight, but the rest of the day starts perfectly. Dont have any part numbers since I havent done it yet but if youve done Ford (Motorcraft) glow plugs, high torque starter, and everything else you mention that would be the last thing Id be worried about.

I went through this with my '90 model after I was bringing it back to life when it had sat for 12 years. First question - how many miles are on the truck? Second quesiton - does it start up easily after it's been running for a while? Third question - is there a difference in hard starting if it's parked with nose uphill, versus nose downhill? Fourth question - when you're cranking - is there white smoke coming out of the exhaust or no smoke until right before it fires?

Here are some of the things that I ended up doing to mine.

1 - replaced manual fuel pump. The check valves were bad allowing the fuel to leak down.
2 - replaced fuel heater element in fuel filter housing. There was a tiny air leak around the electrical harness
3 - replaced fuel return line caps on injectors. This is a known air leak area on the idi's.
4 - replaced glow plugs. 5 of the 8 were bad. Be sure to use FOMOCO glow plugs. Proper PN's are in the archives here.

All of the items above combined to improve the starting, but at the end of the day the engine has 182K miles on it and it takes 30 seconds to a minute of glow plug operation when it's cold before it will fire.
