So for our tow rig we have been noticing that the tranny gets hot enough that you can smell it when you get to destination. We added a cooler and guage to it

My question is this. We havent had a guage before...so what shoud it run?:dunno

We are getting 190-200F on open flat ground even with load....on hills it will climb to 250 with a load and 230 ish w/o load.....

Trans temps will vary with where they are measured. Do not measure in the cooler lines. Preferably measure in the pan. Temps above 220 degrees are damaging to the transmission. Adding a deep aluminum pan and more cooling will both help. I can provide more info if you want to PM me.

Are you towing in OD? most gm gas trucks have 3.73's and when in od that gets the rpm's down pretty low. the problem with the th700 and newer gm autos is the torque converter unlocks as a first step before it wants to downshift, so if your in the pedal quite a bit when towing that converter is continualy locking and unlocking and when they're unlocked they make a lot of heat.
