466 Turbocharger on a 7.3 IDI non turbo?

I can get my hands on a 466 turbocharger from an old 5 ton straight truck for next to nothing. I would be getting the manifolds and all piping from the truck. I was thinking about putting it on my truck, but not as a conventional turbo setup. I want to set it up as an "STS" turbo. Remotely mount it with all oil lines and ducting under the cab. I know this will provide a little turbo lag as it has a lot of pipe to fill and it would take a bit to spool up. Would it be too much turbo for the truck? I would have to make sure it would not spool up to anything over 9psi with all my factory internals. It's pretty much like putting a dump truck turbo on a truck. It is a 1993 non turbo, pump turned up 3.5 flats and 2.5" single stack and an E4OD. Soon to be dual 4" stacks with almost 400 000 kms on it.

i don't think you are going to have an issue. i've driven a IH4700 with a DT466E and the turbo on this monster was tiny in comparison to my ATS.
i can see a very quick spool up but it will choke up at higher RPM's.

I put the exact setup on my truck that you are describing, I have a turbo that was for a dt466 in a 4700 truck mounted down beside the transfer case. I do not really have any lag, there isn't that much piping required to get back to the intake, a little less than a standard system with an added intercooler. The exaust piping on mine is probably the same length if not shorter than an ATS and has much "nicer" bends instead of the almost 180 degree bend required to get the exhaust back up on top the motor using the N/A manifolds. The exhaust housing on mine is an A/R .82 and spools really nicely. Having the turbo mounted low like that is really nice too because you don't have to worry about a lot of bend on a down pipe, you can go straight back with 4 Inch or bigger if you want. The hardest part of the setup is getting the piping to a suitable location for the filter. I was going to run an intake up to the top of a cab like an old cab over truck but I am not sure how it would look, for now I have the filter mounted up under the truck with a guard around it to prevent lots of water from getting into it, but it would not be good for going through very deep water. I am working on another idea now, unless I decide to go back to the idea of the snorkel type intake above the cab, from a cab over semi.

Hey you should post pics of your remote setup. How are your max boost and EGT #s? I'd love to see this work well, and I know it can as there have been a few folks to mount the Dt466 turbos. Sounds like a winner for remote mounts or if you're a very good fabricator.

I will try to get some more pics of my setup this weekend, but I am not sure how much of it you will be able to see, it is almost completely covered up by the transfer case shield. I'll see what I can do though.

Hey thanks, what kind of numbers are you getting? This other guy, RKoch has buitl a few of these setups and it sounds like he gets typical numbers for an IDI turbo kit. To the OP I think your setup could easily take more than 9psi. Since its a 7.3 it should be OK at 12-13 psi with stock bolts. Anything beyond that is living on the ragged edge. Usually the head gaskets are still the weak link but anything beyond 13 psi is wasted as heat without water injection or an intercooler anyhow.

That is my plan, I was telling my wife the other day to make sure that she is off work for at least a few days around that time. Now all I have to do it get the truck painted and it should be ready to go. I've been running around with the bed off of it for a while, waiting to paint it all before I put it back on, who knows though I might go ahead and stick it back on there before I paint it.
