Thought I'd let everyone know that the hydro units on 2000-04 (not certain on the years, mine was from an 02) F250SD will work relatively easily on our IDI's...

Fab a bracket that gaps the unit from the firewall, I think it was 1.5". All I did was sacrifice my old vac unit to fab the bracket, cut the bolts off the hydro, drilled new holes in the hydro bracket and vac booster bracket. Then I attached the hydro to the bracket by 3/8" grade 8 bolts with washers used to space the bracket from the firewall. I think I used about 40 washers. Just make sure you find the proper angle of the actuation rod when fitting everything.

Get the PS unit and both high pressure lines from the 2000-04 F250SD.

The line that runs from the booster to the gear needs to be modified, all I did was cut off the end of the hose that runs to the gear, then put a double flare on the end (which is what ford used) - and I used the fitting end from the old hose, the one that came with the hose is a hair too long to work properly.

The MC from the IDI will not fit without grinding the mount holes, and adding a spacer for the plunger - I just used the Super Duty MC that came with my salvage unit.

I'm still troubleshooting my install, pedal return is a bit slow. I'm almost certain I have restricted return flow, I may rebuild the reservoir and look for clogged screens. 3 quarts of PS fluid flushed out and the fluid is still dirty. I haven't hooked up the MC yet either, so perhaps a lack of resistance from the MC is the cause. Time will tell.

On a side note, if you plan to do wheeling with one - I'd invest in an axillary cooler and axillary reservoir. The fluid gets VERY hot when working these units hard, and the thermal expansion can force the pedal down if you are overfilled. The axillary reservoir also keeps the return backpressure down so the brakes stay responsive.

Thats all I can think of for now, in all I spent 150 on the whole setup. Hopefully this helps others who don't have lots of resources to get a relatively rare F450 setup that will bolt in.

For what it's worth, Chevrolet hydroboost units have a return spring attached to the pedal to help bring it back up faster. I run a Chevy hydroboost in my truck and so I added a return spring to the pedal. Actually my install was very similar to yours, only I just punched the Chevy studs out the bracket and used long bolts to attach the booster to the firewall (spaced out just about as much as yours is), and for lines I used factory replacement lines for a bricknose F-Superduty. I did slot the holes for the master cylinder tho, no big deal there.

Unfortunately, the closest is 4 hour round trip from me. I've checked the local yards up and down, with nothing available. But I have a newer unit that should be easier to replace locally, and can be installed in the time it would take me to drive to one of the distant yards - at the same price.

How is this spring installed? Push or pull?

It's a pull spring, there is a steel tab that slides onto the pin for the booster pushrod and one end of the spring attaches to that, while the other end hooks up to one of the steering column brackets, so when you let off the brakes the spring will pull the pedal back up and assist the hydrobost in that manner.

Guys, When you say get a cooler, do you mean for the Power Steering Fluid? I have an 03 6.0 Ex with factory hydroboost. I do not do any off-roading , but I do tow with it and it is my winter get-where-I-am-going rig..... Do these need a PS cooler? I have not had any other ill effects, other than the "normal" at idle, with your foot on the brakes, the Power Assist for the steering is low, let the truck roll a bit and it is fine.....

Yes, cooler and external tank for the power steering and hydroboost - I plan on installing those on my truck soon too, I just need a nice tank for the purpose. Do you really need them for your truck, probably not, but it's nice to have them.

Ivan,

My truck does have the external tank for PS fluid, up on the drivers fender, not to far from the hodroboost unit itself..... I am not sure that is has a cooler on it, but I do know it has the tank.......

Ok, so tank's taken care of, as for the cooler just trace the return lines from both the steering box and the hydroboost and see if they go through a cooler.

Most modern vehicles have a finned core type cooler in front of the coolant radiator. Our old IDIs only have a steel line running across the crossmember and back - not ideal for a hydroboost conversion...

I might as well do a full system swap (save for the gear) and get the 02 Superduty cooler.

My pedal firmed up after letting it sit and cool after flushing it, but I am going to look into getting a spring anyway - Thanks for the info
