Hello everyone, I need some help....In more ways then one. Lol

My truck is a 1994 7.3 idi stock turbo f350 4x4, 4:10 gears, 33 in tires. E40d with a slight shift kit and upgraded torque converter. Pump turned all the way up, 16 psi boost. New injectors, and a remand pump at one point, don't know when tho.

My problem is that im getting around 7-8 mpg, no matter how I drive it or if im pulling a trailer or not.

The truck before was getting 15-18 mpg. What would cause it to get that bad of fuel mileage??

Previous owner (friend of mine) and when I first bought the truck was getting 15-18mpg. Then all of sudden got worse. I have done new Delphi bb injectors , new filters all the way around, resealed fuel system, no leaks, timed pump. None of this has help.

It smokes white/black mix on start up (it's about zero degrees out) for a little bit then clears out. Smokes black, not heavily black, when flooring it. Other then that truck runs perfect....just horrible fuel mileage.

Were they brand new Delphi's? Rebuilt ones are crap, if you can call them rebuilt.
Maybe your pump might be suspect but either way, I'd turn the fuel down a little bit also.

How many miles on truck?

Does the IP have a reman tag on it?

You mention timing it, how was that accomplished?

What type of driving, towing, just light driving, heavy hauling what?

Need to know..

More than likely pump is kaput...

riot; He's got the pump turned all the way up, His timing is retarded (Black Smoke), whoever and how they timed it, seems to be wrong, or with the injectors, there probably slobbering.

After he answers your questions, we'll know more.

Truck has 187,000 on it. They were brand new Delphi bb injectors. Pump has a remand tag on it from ford. Timed it by the pulse method using the correct tooling, set it to 9 degrees, tryed different timing settings already nothing changed. I do a mix of all kinds of driving. Highway, pulling trailers. Mostly highway. Doesnt matter how I drive it or if im pulling something it gets the same mpg.

Did you forget to lock out ur hubs at some point? And hows ur tire pressure? turn ur fuel screw down simple as that no doubt that will give u back the most significant gain, theres no reason for it. My idi hasnt an ounce of power lack, with 4:10 drw and my c6 (no overdrive) i see 12-15-17/G empty about 13 loaded, And mind u i run 3k and 70mph.

I'd wonder about the Ford reman pump. I remember a customer who came in for an engine. We reused his lifetime guaranteed Ford pump an d injectors. After we got the new engine running, the guy that I was working with at the time said that the pump had a funny feel to it when he would rev the engine by hand. He called the shop foreman over to look at it. All of a sudden, it gave a nasty screeching noise and the engine stopped. We all three saw the pump turn all the way over to the passenger's side. When the pump was pulled off, you could spin the part that bolts to the gear (not sure what it's called) by hand freely with no resistance. Normally you can feel it moving the internals of the pump. He had to buy another pump to get home. "Ford" pumps are only as good as whoever rebuilds them makes them. Just like any other.

OP- So the PO "says" it got 15-18 or you have observed 15-18 since you've owned it? Big difference there.

So here are some more questions to answer:

1) If indeed it got 15-18, was the PO driving like grandma and now you drive like grandpa after he's had a couple shots?
2) Did the PO drive mostly highway and now you are driving mostly city?
3) Have you owned a diesel before? I ask because our truck are notorious for not being able to get the last few gallons of fuel in the tank easily. Consistent filling of the fuel tank is important to accurate fuel economy readings.
4) Have you checked odometer accuracy with the 33-inch tires? Run a couple of measure miles in a straight line (mile markers on straight sections of the highway). If you read near 1 mile, you can eliminate that as a possible source of inaccuracy. If you cover only 8/10s of a mile, or some number less than 1, then your odometer is reading less miles than the actual miles traveled and that will make the mpg calculation read less than actual (the opposite is true if it reads more). If that is the case (forgive me if you already know this), and let's say it's 8/10, then all you do is multiply your miles per tank times .8... 100 miles X.8= 80 miles actually traveled and then you will get your real MPG.

Beyond the above, who knows. The E4OD trucks are usually the most economical of the ones in our era due to the OD trans. Usually if the truck runs "good" (by an objective standard) it doesn't have any serious fuel system problems. You could toss a lot of money at it trying to figure it out and that why it's best to start with the free and easy, basic stuff first. Like checking the odo and making sure you are getting a full tank (an extra five minutes squirting the fuel in a quart at a time until the tank is visibly full). If you put the 33s on and the PO was using stock tires, that is a strong indication of odo inaccuracy being part of the problem. Not intending to insult anyone but I wouldn't necessarily take the PO's word 100% on the mpg either. Unless you've observed the same using accurate methods of checking and then suddenly it changed....? When I was a dealer tech, we used to get complaints of poor mpg. 75 percent of the time it was either inaccurate mpg checking or the driving situation and the owner "expecting" more (like a guy who cruised at 100 mph and still expected to get 16 mpgon the highway. Of the remaining 25 percent there was a mix of legit vehicle problems from EFI issues, dragging brakes, low air pressure, fuel leaks, etc.

The original posting has some suspect items in it. The thread talks about it ran fine when I bought it. Now it gets terrible mileage. Replaced parts but no change. Set timing and tried several different degrees.. At this point I'm not sure how to answer all this. 7 or 8 mpg is not good at all. My thoughts are running all over the place trying to give a good answer but I can't. Will be watching the original posters answers and maybe I can feed this beast something..
