Mine doesn't have all the ridges like the one in your pic. That face is smooth. But it seemed to go back on "normally". I put it on at 55 ft-lbs. Then backed it off 4 clicks. If I had re-used the bearings, it would have been 8 clicks.
Glad I did this. The bearings and races were all timken brand. The outer bearings looked new. The inner bearings were pitted, rusted, corroded, discolored and crazed from the heat. Both races were discolored and crazed from the heat.
I'm pretty sure that the reason for the heat damage is because the diff fluid level was low. I need to keep an eye on that.
Got the driver's side done yesterday. Today, I will turn the truck around and do the passenger side. I'm doing it this way, because my driveway is on a compound slope. I am trying to keep the side I am working on, on the high side. Only lost about 1 to 3 tablespoons worth of diff fluid yesterday, doing it that way.
