Well I have a been a member for a little while now and have been soaking up as much technical information about the older IDI's. I currently have a 1992 F250 4x4 with the 7.3/5spd combo. I picked up the truck for free, and it took a starter motor, some battery terminals and some slicing and dicing of the the clutch saftey wiring (thanks to an aftermarket command start) to get it to start off the key.

Here's my problem though. It starts quickly and strong, even down to slightly below freezing, sometimes with a little more cranking. It purs like a kitten at idle, no miss and slight smoke when cold. After its warmed up some and you rev it up to around 2000rpm, it starts to miss badly and smoke like crazy. It revs up nicely to 2000rpm, and then after that its crap.

What part should I start diagnosing first? I do not have special idi tools etc, but a lot of mechanical knowledge and am not afraid to get in there. I think I might have come up with a use for the truck but would like to understand what is wrong with it to determine if its going to work for my next project.

What I have done to it is installed an injector return line kit (since it did leak there before, and unfortunately still does so I think I might have messed up some O rings etc). Other than that a starter motor and a some battery terminals. Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

How many miles on the truck? These engines are too simple and often times it's just a fuel pump / injector issue. 100K+ miles means fuel pump and injectors should be changed. I'm new to IDI's (2 yrs now) but I've learned alot from the internet, first hand experience, and ALOT of reading on this website. I too came into a 1993 F350 CC dually for free. 199K on the odometer, started great (means good compression) ran well, but at highway speeds (2000 rpm) would sputter slightly specifically if I would let off the throttle slightly. First question everyone asked me when I came here for help was how many miles? Original injectors? Original pump? Recommendation: change it all. WOW, life has been good. These parts are cheap and needed after about 100k.

Well I can't give you guys a history of the injector and ip maintenance but the truck has 330k kilometers so that's like 200k ish miles. Injectors here are about $800 and a pump is also $800. Is there any way of testing these items without an injector pop tester etc? Also if I do change the pump, what tools are required for properly timing it and where would a person find them?

You'd be better off talking to typ4 (Russ) and agnem (Mel) about your fuel injection needs.....their prices will be a ton cheaper than what you've been quoted up there. What color is the smoke?
