Hey guys, i just bought an 85 diesel truck, and don't really know a lot about these things. Its a normal cab long bed f-250. And its naturally aspirated with 150,000 miles on it. She's a fuel mileage machine. last fill up was 19mpg with light light driving. What kind of upgrades can i do to get some more out of her? I believe she has an exhaust system on it but no turbo but i have on for it. Is it worth putting the turbo on for more mileage?

What are you after? more power? more MPGs?

for power you can take a look at the exhaust system and see what size it is. 3" is a good size for a non turbo 6.9. 2.5 is too small and 4" is a waste of money unless you run a turbo. Then look at the intake and see if there is still a big bowl hanging down from the air cleaner lid. If you find one, cutting it off will gain you a slight boost.

Assuming you have stock intake and exahust, you can get a "SLIGHT" gain in power but its not going to be a night and day difference.

If you want a night and day difference, then you need to look at a turbo. New that start around $2000, used you can get them anywhere from $200 up to $1000 typically. Lower priced ones usually missing more parts and needing more work. If you already have one, then use it. None of us ever regretted adding a turbo.

Turbocharging won't make a noticable improvement in MPGs in most cases, but the truck will pull better for the same amount of fuel. The catch is being gentile with the pedal enough to get that extra MPG or two. Most of us are not able to do that:DLOL

Other then that, just keep up to date with the oil/filter changes and never sell it. 19 MPG is great for that era (no overdrive).

I was looking for more power and fuel mileage. It is a 3 speed auto with no overdrive, so maybe putting in a different trans or something might work. But i thank you very much for the info :)

I personally just joined the site (and bought my '86)

I have pretty horrible fuel economy, but for some (very strange) reason, it has been improving since I bought the truck. I started at around 12, now im up to 15... go figure! :dunno

I am in the same dillema as you, 3 speed auto with no O/D.

I think the C6 transmission is really pretty durable, and if you want to stick with a C6, then you can add an overdrive unit separately. Gear Vendors http://www.gearvendors.com/ or US Gear http://www.usgear.com/ Sells these units as bolt in upgrades for our truck (but they're not cheap)

Other options are 5-speed manual conversion (ZF5 transmission)

Just depends on how far and deep you want to get involved in it!

Welcome to OB.net by the way, very helpful group of people here!

The key to higher fuel milage is lower your RPM's without making the engine work harder. That's why an aftermarket overdrive is such a popular option. A turbo can help too, by burning the fuel your already using more completely. The key to getting better mileage with one of those, is to NOT turn up your pump like the instructions tell you. LOL Dump the C6 in favor of a ZF-5. A manual trans will always out perform an automatic in the long run.
