Your other option is to use a dakota digital signal converter and use the current tachometer. You'll never go all the way to 6000 RPM of course, but you can still get a gasser tach to work if you really wanted to. Another option is to take a signal off the alternator.

I ended up making a mag pickup circuit for the diesel ranger a couple years ago. You want to talk about rare - a diesel tach for a ranger, now that's rare!
The ranger tach also had a calibration resistor on the back of the board that allowed me to calibrate the RPM range to anything I wanted. I don't know if the F-series tachometers have it but I would assume so. Electronics back then was much easier to play with.
Does your current tachometer actually show a reading when the engine is running?
