New IDI Story In Diesel World

Nope. Per engineering documents, interviews with surviving people from the era and SAE paper 830381 (whichoutlines the development of the engine from an engineering perspective), their engineering target was 3200-3500 for maximum power. But that was before design and testing. In the end, 3300...

New IDI Story In Diesel World

IMO, it's at or near the number one structural improvement you can make to a 6.9 or 7.3. The job is not "easy-peasy" but it's straightforward. If your truck hasn't been apart for a while, or never has been apart, expect to find other issues to deal with, such as to the cylinder head. In most...

Dang! Sad to hear that. He was a real asset to the community.

New IDI Story In Diesel World

Your reference to Towcat sounds a little past tense... hope it isn't. By the way, those 21,000 hours were on many engines, not just one.

New IDI Story In Diesel World

Haven't been around for a while, though I still have my bought-nearly-new '86. Still runs like a top, though rust has taken more of the body. I come in and lurk occasionally. Anyway, I did another article for Diesel World on the 6.9. The paper version was in the July 2021 issue but the online...

    Turbo v non-turbo mileage?

Installed Banks kit in '87 when the truck had 7K miles on it. Slight uptick in mpg for the same driving style. Where the turbo shines is the power department and the work you get out of a galling of fuel. I noticed that under load the truck deliver better mpg because you didn't have to have your...

    Anyone running first gen Banks?

Banks will still hand make the pipes... they saved the blueprints. Don't know if they will still do the pedestals. I have a 1st gen like that, installed in '87, but it's an automatic.

Question abut atf in fuel filter clean up?

Sadly, you must have meant to send that to yourself. Try responding without insults next time and perhaps a bit more directly on the fact I presented. If you can.

Question abut atf in fuel filter clean up?

People in the GM 6.2-6.5L community report that running straight ATF has caused the head and rotor of DB-2 pumps to "hydrolock" momentarily and snap the shaft due to the increased viscosity of the ATF versus diesel fuel. These anecdotal reports are as valuable and useful as any that report a...

    Front Tank Float Caution

Hey Bill, I had a second one bought as a spare, so am good for now, thanks! I'm on a farm near Kalida.

    Front Tank Float Caution

I could and I may but I will first see if LMC will make it right. The tricky part of resoldering a float is getting the fuel out of it first. It never drains as quickly as it fills ( : < ), unless you drill a hole first.Which then becomes another hole to solder.

    Front Tank Float Caution

About a year ago, the float on my front tank sank. It wasn't the original one but it was probably a decade or more old. That time, it was easy to find the right float but this time was a bit tough. I got one at LMC Truck. Two actually, because my late '80s Ford tractor uses the same one and they...

    Mpg is way down

A one time drop isn't necessarily something to worry about because, often as not, it's some error or a temporary change in situation that caused it. There are many things that can cause a drop in MPG, up to an including fuel that is more foamy than normal and you don't get as full a tank. This...

    stuck fuel filter.

I second the strap wrench. Had one for 30 years. Used it maybe a dozen times over that period but when I did, it was the only thing that would work. If you use the strap wrench and place the strap up near the base, you have half a chance to get the filter off without crushing it.

    Mirror Adhesive- Two Epic Fails

Two month ago, the inside mirror fell off. The button came off the glass. Not the original one, as the windshield was replaced in 2002. Try1- Went out and bought one of the easily obtained Permatex mirror adhesive kits. Reglued the button per instros. Went back a day later to install the...

    6.9 head stud upgrade possibility?

Another thing, the top deck thickness was increased on the 7.3L block by 0.060"(nearly 5/8-in.) over the 6.9 (0.560" from .500") to support the larger bolts better and provide a stronger surface. Also, the bosses for the lower bolts in the 7.3L head were enlarged and given ribs to better support...

    Marvel Mystery

Thanks for the great explanation, much of which I was actually able to grasp. I didn't bookmark it, but last night I found a posting on another diesel forum of some internal pump seal that were deteriorated, allegedly from acetone. Sound like long term exposure isn't a good deal.

    Marvel Mystery

In theory, there is enough of the latest lubricity additives in ULSD to not be a problem for us. The potential issue is that these additive are not mixed at the refinery but by the distributor or retailer. The refineries put out unadditivized, industry standard base fuel, so a regional Chevron...

    Marvel Mystery

In raiding my files, I read acetone may aid in the combustion process but too much can cause a drop in MPG. At this point I don't understand the chemistry part of it. Acetone attacks and deteriorates certain plastics and rubber, nitrile being one. Can you say fuel tank "showrhead?" Looking on...

    Eye candy!! 7.3 Marine 275hp

Those engines look similar to the the Powr Star engines discussed a few posts back and where I posted a '93 sales Powr Star brochure for. They were 260 hp for the TD and 200 for the NA, spun up to 3400 rpm (that's the pleasure boat rating not the commercial rating, which is about 25% lower). I...

    Marvel Mystery

Yep! Had to face the same thing myself. What helps me in calibrating the "Buttmeter" (good term!) is being able to do before and after test drive and dyno tests. Still, it's pretty tough to "feel" 5-10 hp. Five hp is within the margin for error on a chassis dyno with a good operator and the...

    Marvel Mystery

How I would answer that is varying conditions. Maybe one day the air is cooler and the engine develops a little more power. Or the atmospheric pressure was higher, or you had a good load of fuel that time. Or one time you were carrying a little extra weight and the next you weren't (both tanks...

    Marvel Mystery

First, that test was purely about lubricity and no one has claimed otherwise. While some of this products had, or were claimed to have, some performance benefits, those aspects were not tested. Also, you guys do realize that Arlen Spicer was just a guy with with a few buck that had Southwest...
