How to remove a Garrett turbo?

I'm skeptical, but I'll give it a try. Unfortunately, when I tried to take the good controller off the U-haul, it fell apart. Went and ordered a new one from AZ. Right at $100 and a 3 day wait. Almost enough to make me do a gpcbp.

How to remove a Garrett turbo?

I bought a truck with a 1994 7.3 IDI and a Garrett turbo. Eventually I'll be moving that motor into my U-Haul. I've never had a turbo before and right now I need to change the glow plugs, glow plug controller and oil pressure sensor but I'm not sure how to get the turbo off. Any help or...

Thanks Thewespaul and jwalterus I spoke with the truck owner and learned some things. It's an 1989 with a 94 engine. The truck has just under 300,000 miles on it, no idea how many miles on the engine. He's the second owner, previously owner did the engine swap and added a Garrett turbo. He...

Just called Napa looking for the coolant additive test strips. All he found was a radiator test kit for 90 something dollars. He said it has the strips, but he hasn't got a way to order one. Anyone know where to find them?

Mine's a cube truck, so there shouldn't be any problems. But I'm not quite following this bit. (Must be getting old or something )

I'm leaning towards the truck with the turbo. I priced an overdrive a while back and a new one was $3000. Plus I get the turbo. If the engine lasted long enough, I can save up to have it rebuilt, if necessary. Plus I'd have a lot of spare parts that I could pick the best of. Here's what I...

Looking for input on an idea...

I set my old 6.9 van up with three of the largest marine batteries that Walmart offered , a 150 watt solar panel and a 750 watt inverter. There was no battery isolator and i never had a problem. I removed the old standard batteries completely. If your only charging tool batteries and you drive...

It's more than just a daily driver / work truck , I've also got part of it set up as an rv so I can live in it. :) Any idea what IH would want for an engine?

The one with the overdrive is in a running truck. I won't even considered buying a used engine unless I can run it and do some tests. I tried buying just a motor once. When I drained it's oil, the first thing I got was a gallon of water. I do need the truck PDQ. Every tried working, shopping and...

So my old 7.3 is toast and I'm looking at options. The engine is for an 89 U-haul with an 11 foot box. The most important things to me are reliability and fuel mileage. 1. Spend about $1500 for a used truck, check the engine and hope I get lucky. 2. Spend about $4000 for a rebuilt from...

Just thought of a weak link in my plan. If I were to try putting a little oil in the cylinders, it'd probably just get trapped on the cups :/

I'm not going to pull the motor apart just for the sake of curiosity. I have to have a shot at an affordable fix. If I had to tear this one down far enough to do the rings, I'd want to go ahead and do a complete rebuilt. Considering the price of the kit and the time it'd take me, I'd be...

I don't think I could tell if the rings are bad just by pulling a head.

Something caused the coolant over pressure. A head gasket, cavitation or a slipped sleeve. The gaskets seem the most likely. But if the rings are shot, I'm probably going to write this motor off. Why do the rings when I could find that she's also got a cracked block or cavitation? Gaskets...

Still looking at options. I'm unlikely to replace the rings myself. But isn't there a chance that the low compression was caused by the head gaskets blowing even worse once the coolant pressure shot up? Couldn't I re-test compression for the rings by putting an eye dropper of oil into each...

So you would or wouldn't recommend promar? Just checked their site. $3900 for a 7.3 idi turbo. Warranty isn't as good as Jasper's, only 18 months, 75k miles. But I think they're about a grand cheaper.

The biggest thing I could lose is time. I do handyman work and have become pretty popular. I'm lucky to get a day or two off per month. There is a truck online, that I'd love to get as a donor. "19w94 Ford F350 XLT Dually IDI Turbo Diesel w/143K Miles. One Owner. Converted to Factory ZF 5...

You missed a starting problem, air in the fuel lines. Unfortunately, that $1000 engine has already been pulled. So I wouldn't even be able to hear it run. On my current engine, Lord only knows how many miles are on it or if SCAs were used. Like I said, it's an old U-haul. What I'd like to do...
