    all sorts of unusual electrical problems

    Pull the cables off the battery and backside of the alternator. Look for internal corrosion and failure inside the wires. I had the wire completely fall off the alternator wire terminal but of course didn't find it until I had bought a new alternator.

    7.3 longevity

    Only 145,000 miles (243,000 km) on the odo but she's running like a top. I can actually hear and feel the need for fresh rotella oil changes at 5,000 miles. I'm looking forward to at least 300,000 miles out of this ol girl. You made a good choice from the sounds of it. Enjoy.

    truck surges when cold, lope at idle?

    Nasty cold nite here and forgot to plug the ol gal in. Took two attempts to start it and it loped about a dozen times before smoothing out. Lmao....dang thing's like a farm tractor. Never a lope issue when plugged in and instant firing. Well worth the electricity to avoid the super cold...

    HPOP rattle

    I just went thru all that nonsense. Did the water pump and the upper pulley only to have the tensioned pulley fail. I'm getting the sense that it's best to replace entire groups of things on these trucks when the time comes. That tensioner sure did squeal like a scalded pig before it failed/seized.

    Sounds like a pretty tough conversion. Wouldn't it be a lot easier to put in an ol Cummins engine? (besides, of course the standard blasphemy of a cummins in a ford...haha)

    I've been down that road. Had to re-balance the drive shaft. Had to keep speeds well under 30 to get home. It had spun off a weight. In fact, you might inspect it first to see if one has come off. Odds are you'll find that's the problem.
