My F250 transmission has been acting up a bit. Sometime hard upshifts. Always hunting for gears at part throttle between 25mph up to 50mph. The tach has never worked correctly since I have owned the truck. It just has been worse recently. I do a search and find the transmission gets a signal from the tach sensor. Couls it really be that simple? The answer is yes! I replaced the tach sensor and the tach works and the transmission shifts correctly! So a big THANK YOU for having this site and information available!

on behalf of all the long time contributors on this forum.. Thank you for recognizing this forum. Many of the members here are doing everything they can to post help to anyone that asks. Some of us have a slightly difficult time trying to figure out what the poster wants so we ask more questions. Many times its something the posters have done but.. they did not post " oh yeah... I just played with or replaced that. now it wont start or runs poorly". Personally sometimes I feel like a miner digging out the gold or truth in most answers.

Awesome, I'm new here and the information here is invaluable. It solved my shifting issue as well by letting me know about the dead speedo/ odometer problem. 13$ at the junkyard and my trans shifts like new

9 out of 10 E4OD issues really are this simple.A lot of people see all kinds of these questions and jump to conclusions lol but it's usually nothing more than a failed sensor, blown bulb, relay, fuse or frayed wire.

Ok here goes, I have a E4OD behind a 7.3IDI in a E350, recently it fails to shift down. Start out in high gear if I don't manually shift to first. Any suggestions as to what might be the cause..
Thanks ahead of time.

Does your speedometer and tachometer work? If that's a yes to both I'd pull out a voltmeter and check that your tps didn't die. You can find the values it should be, mines set at 1.13 at idle

What Gary said is so true, I would also add that a lot of times it's the simple answers that throw people off the most. Just cause it sounds to easy to e true does not mean it's wrong. (Experience talking)!
If you look around other sights you will also find this is one of the few sights that people are not harsh with you [emoji2]

Whats the fluid look like, how many miles since last fluid change, whats the fluid level checked when HOT engine running and in Neutral.

It would be good to pull the codes to see if you have any trans codes.

Make sure the MLPS marks are lined up in Neutral. Could be MLPS failure.

Check trans connector on pass side for bare shorted wires and that it is plugged in all the way.

Could be S1 failure on the solenoid pack.

Check FILP/TPS on the IP, voltage set between .92 and 1.02 KOEO, smooth voltage output from idle to WOT, voltage at WOT should be less than 5 VDC.

Ideally,a new thread would of been best as it's not really associated with this one but no big deal.Just something to note for next time is all.

If I'm reading your post correctly, your getting high gear starts in the D position is this correct?

"Start out in high gear if I don't manually shift to first."

This one here is just as simple as the original posters issue with his dead tach.Only in your case,a high gear start in D (along with manual 2nd gear in both the 1&2 shift positions) means the trans isn't getting power.

Most often this is due to a failed relay.Rather than like the original posters issue, with a $80 sensor and 10 minutes, your issue will likely be $4 and take just 20 seconds.:D
You don't need a "ford" relay. You can just grab one at the auto store and snap the universal mount off it so your fuse box lid will close.;) ..........Well,I dunno in your case. That 89-91 type looks funky.May not be as simple as just putting a standard relay in like the 9th gen trucks......but they can't be that hard to come by either.

That was the culprit new relay installed and the trans shifts like it should. Thanks a bunch.
