'87 6.9 clutch fan removal

so after my f100's camshaft broke,:mad: i was headin into the store for the morning mountain dew and cigs for my dad, was cruisin along 55 like normal, and BOOM!-cuss the fan broke clean in half and sheared the bolts off the clutch, ruined my radiator. come to find out, the fan was cracked in half barely holding on, thats why it came un-c***ed. so i was wondering if any special tools were needed to remove the clutch fan. and which way does the nut come off? clockwise or counter clockwise, any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

It's left hand thread, so it comes off clockwise. If memory serves its a 1 7/8" nut, you can buy a wrench, make one out of some 1/4" steel, use an impact hammer and chisel, pipe wrench, or rent a tool at an auto parts store. There are a fair number of threads discussing various ways to get it off, be careful because if you strip it its a lot harder to get off. It's tight but with the right tools not too bad.

thanks..i hope it comes off with the wrench, the idea of an air chisel on it doesent sound appealing to me lol, maybe my dad just raised me on the cautious side when it comes to wrenchin but it doesent sound like the 1st option

Please remove the offensive language in your post, that is not really OB style.

As for the fans clutch, well it's a matter of the correct tools. BUY rent or build em and it will come off LH thread and yes 1 7/8" is correct.

As has been mentioned, you can rent the tool from most auto parts stores. But, to make life easier, ask them to rent you the tool you need to keep the fan from spinning while you're trying to turn it. Makes life much easier. I rented them from O'Reilly. The wrench was a little loose on the clutch nut, so I wrapped one of the forks with some duct tape and was good to go.

what if half the fan is missing and the other half is mangled? will the tool work? cuz my fan is wasted completely.

Tool goes on the big 1 7/8 nut all along and the other tool holds the pulley from turning.

Take a look in my water pump replacement thread in tech section, there is info and a pictures to help you out.

I"m not sure whats broken..pictures would be very helpful.

im not at the truck, the fan itself is broken in half, so essentially there is half a fan, and the clutch part of the fan is gouged up and the bolts sheared off where the fan connects.

Ya no worries u can remove the clutch with the correct tools and then replace both clutch and fan as needed.

Sorry to red about this. So your saying tha broken fan ruined the bolts that holds the fan to the clutch?? If so thats ok. The tools needed to remove the nut frome the water pump shaft is as posted. 1 7/8. The other holding tool fits over the bolts that holds the pulley to the water pump. It covers the outside of the bolts and locks the pulley so it can't turn but it will move. I use a 24 and 36 inch breaker bar when I remove the fan clutch from the pumps. One bar gets locked on whatever I can find on the front of the engine and the other turns loose the nut. You might want to replace the water pump too. The shaft may have been bent when it came apart. Thats easy to check if there is a bent shaft. Just turn it and watch for movement. Most here will use some blue loctite on the nut threads. Then 160 lbs of torque is whats required for a tight fan nut. These engines have extremely high compression so they shop suddenly when we shut down the engine. That sudden stopping of the heavy fan sometimes will loosen them. And then they fly into the radiaters. Now will be a great time to install an aluminum radiater too. The Champion Radiaters are a fair deal. Many have gear phrase for them. And the cost is right at $200.00. sure bests the new copper brass radiaters for cost and cooling ability.

thanks for the help everyone, robbed the fan off my buddies parts 7.3 so i deff owe him one. i would like to install new radiator, but im flat broke right now and got bills for parts already on my 302. anyhow, i the connector where the top hose connects got bent, so i sweat it out with a torch and straightened it, but i gotta remove the radiator to solder it properly, should be good to go.
