I ran across this video. I'm definitely gonna do that, if I am able to do the job myself.

Saw this one too on removing it from a V-belt engine. Having AC gone on the van is gonna make less work. I should probably buy a rechargeable driver like that but I'm still in the stone age, manual socket wrenches.

I might treat myself to that $40 one, though the $60 extended one might be better for use on this van. due to more limited reach space with the van hood as compared to a truck.

Ohhh... AutoZone loaner tool program is WAY better than O'Reilly's. O'Reilly requires you to return the tools within 48 hours. AutoZone is 90 days! I might try their pulley holder for the heck of it, and also buy their water pump since it has good reviews too. Plus you can order the tool online, have it shipped to you, and then return it in store. No trying to hunt down the tool at different locations.

For many years just used the big wrench pictured and wacked it with a hammer. If you leave the belt on, most of the time you wont need to find a way to hold the pulley.

But if you have access to compressed air and a real air hammer, that is the way ....

I just placed a RockAuto order for a good bit of little things for this job including new radiator hoses and 2x green FleetRunner belts for ALT & PS. And a regular Gates belt for VP.

Plus it's needing shocks and a wiper arm, due to one suddenly breaking off at the plastic end.

I stuck this order on PayPal Credit, 6 months no interest, so I don't have to feel in a pinch all at once.

I'll probably pay $120 retail ($150, minus 20%) for the fan clutch from AutoZone or O'Reilly's. Lifetime warranty, just in case. They're $89 online, so it's a small premium for the actual warranty. And since it seems impossible to get a Motorcraft water pump, I'll get one that has good reviews from O'Reilly's or AutoZone too for the 20% off. Also lifetime warranty and it costs less than online for a supposedly decent pump with the 20% off.

When the truck and I were younger I could back off the fan assembly with large channel locks. Over the years the truck grew more stubborn and I grew weaker. Last September I rented a kit from NAPA - no charge when returned.

I have a decent sized breaker bar, so hopefully I can get it loosened and tightened with the proper, specific wrench that accepts 1/2" that I ordered. I have a 1/2" torque wrench, but I'm not sure how the wrench extension might mess with the torque being applied to the clutch nut. Maybe a shorter adapter would be better for tightening, with the torque wrench.

You use the gear wrench and wack it with a mini sledge with the belt on. Same thing in reverse because when the engine revs it tightens it. When the fan clutch is engaged and then disengages is the only thing to keep an eye on. Any time I do it I mark a straight line across the nut with paint pen and periodically observe it. Haven’t had one move at all.

O'Reilly lost out on a sale to me because their site is screwed up for shipping. It never loads and you can't check out. Maybe they'll fix it soon but whatever.

I did other shopping around and found some cheap priced parts. No lifetime warranty but oh well. It costs about $100 less and it'll probably be fine. I'll be hooking up the real water temperature gauge I swiped from the motorhome.

Walmart (and Amazon) has this fan clutch for $54. I ordered from Walmart for the 90 day return window, instead of 30 from Amazon. And it can be returned in any Walmart store.

The same one is $98 from RockAuto:

For the water pump, I found this on eBay. That's the same exact one O'Reilly's sells for $60. It has free return (seller pays) if for some reason it's damaged or has shaft play before it's installed.

eBay stuff like that can be very good deals. I put a new old stock wiper motor on the motorhome for half the cost of anywhere else and it worked great.

I got the fan clutch wrench today. It says 47mm but has the 48mm part number. It fits the fan clutch though and easily loosened it on the van, so whatever. I snugged it back because I don't have the new fan clutch or water pump yet. They're some of the slowest things to get to me. I should have them in about a week from today.

I'm having to deal with fixing the bug right now too. A gas station was pumping pure water on Tuesday and took out several dozen cars within half a mile in all directions of the gas station. The bug had 40% water in its tank. The carburetor is still not acting right so I have to try cleaning it again. The insurance company for the station has already been in contact with me, but since I'm working on it myself, it's a slow process to work on it during daylight hours, around eating and walking Lucy. I'm not an early bird, nor is Lucy. Thank goodness for having AAA, it cost me $0 out of pocket for a 25 mile tow out to the LTVA. Their insurance will pay 25% of annual AAA membership since I get 4 tows per year and I had to use one as a direct result of the water in gas breakdown.

Jug #4 during tank gravity drain when the water quit and it switched to gas. I'm pointing to the line between water on the bottom and gas on top. The first 3 jugs are all water.

Man I'm sorry to hear that.

Looks like I can squeeze a rebuilt 30 pict 1 carburetor out of it from a good rebuilder. $439 is the price unless I send in a core.... and wait for the 8 weeks turnaround time for $349.

Sounds like their insurance is fine with the $439 price, but I'm waiting to hear back from the rebuilder to see if they have them in stock, ready to ship sooner than 8 weeks without needing my core.

I have a 28 pict 1 on it working right now. 30-1 squeezes a few HP more out of the 40HP though.

And I ordered some more carburetor mounting gaskets, 4 for under $13 with shipping so they'll probably cover that too. I had to use some I had already, so it's fair.

They're getting off cheap. A specialty VW shop would be $100-150/hr to do what I have done. I've put probably 8-10 hours into messing with it over several days, trying to get it working right. They'll be out around $575 when all is said and done if they'll cover the no-core-needed rebuilt carburetor. They'll cover 1/4 of a year of AAA since I used 1 of the 4 tows per year I get for the membership cost.

Might check this out for a water pump -- priced higher than parts stores but quality always costs more

I have one of those. And I can’t get my engine up to temp… with a tested OEM Motorcraft thermostat, the flow cooler might be part of the equation. I also have way too big of a radiator. But nonetheless, I highly recommend that water pump.
