Hazard does only activate front blinkers?

Just getting back on the road, I noticed that when I pull the hazard switch only my front indicators flash, nothing on the rear?

Normal indicators do work as supposed to.

what could be the issue here?

You are not holding on the brake are you? The rear lights will not flash with the brake pedal pushed.

No, and since this is (was) a ambulance, they have the amber indicators flashing in the rear, apart from the brake lights.
which was adapted by the factory.

It was adapted by the ambulance body manufacturer. Ford never had the european rear amber setup until the explorers and some of the rangers. It's hard to say what is wrong unless you have the schematic for the ambulance.

I do, but the funny thing is; I can have the US system of indicators as well (the red one, one brake, one blinking)
I still need to take a peek on the fuse panel, but are there special relais for the normal (2x) indicators and a separate one for the Warning (4x)? or are the both the same? 1989 F-350

The original setup had a very complex switch in the steering column. This switch did the hazard functions and the turn/brake functions all in one. Here is a diagram of a 1986. While it' earlier than your 89 and some of the wire colors may be different, the theme is the same.

We have had a few guys once in awhile trying to certify one of these trucks in Germany and several other foreign countries like Australia. They are required to have the rear amber turns. We have found the simplest way to achieve this is to take wires and tie the front turn lights to the new rear amber turns.

Hello Franklin,
Mine has had it's first registration as well in Germany, though since it was a ambulance, it already had amber rears.
Thanks for the scheme, I'll have a look at it.

What I discovered for the moment; fuse 1 was blown, the indicator relay was removed and replaced with some terminals with wires in them, going to a proper European electronic indicator relay with a (sort of) wigwag relay, which had some corrosion on/in it, so I'm replacing that one first.
In the mean time, If I pull the warning switch only my two front indicators blink!?!
I'm following the path of it now, and I guess that when I replaced that "wig-wag" relay I might have solved the problem? we'll see.

Well, The "wigwag" relay was full of rust, when I had it out and on the table, a trace of brown powder was coming out, and when I opened it , the whole thing was completely rusted out!
So after putting the new one in, the hazard worked as before.
ONLY, after starting the truck, and pulling the warning again, it didn't work anymore!
another fuse blown!
anyone an Idea where that could be coming from?

Get a box of fuses. Put it in without starting the truck. The lights work ok forever and ever? If so, the problem is not the hazard lights but something else on that fuse. Problem is, you do not have a diagram I think you said. If you did, you could figure out what else is on that fuse.

Not sure if you could leave the fuse out, turn the truck on, and figure out what else is not working. You can see in the factory diagram above, in 1986 they had the brake lights on the same fuse as the hazards.

We just went round and round with another guy on here who was blowing fuses and thought it was some thing in the turnsignal circuit. Come to find out, it was something to do with the reverse lights, which are on the same fuse as the turn lights.

P.S. I see YOU DO have a diagram for the ambulance part?

Yes I do, but I'm not sure if I can find it.
I've bought the truck in 2005, with some documentation, but since I never needed it, now there most probably a thick layer of dust on it?
hihihi.

I did a google search on "ambulance wiring diagram" and several brands came up. I didn't go further to see if they were actually available or not for free. Horton was a brand that came up along with Medtec and Wheeled Coach.

Not sure it applies, but my '86 F250 only had one light working on the hazards and all turn signals worked fine. I cleaned the switch in the steering column with some electrical contact cleaner and a paperclip and got all the lights working. I assume after several decades with little use those contacts had oxidized enough to not make contact.
