The "good" models of E4OD will be late 80's into late 90's, diesel of course, trucks most likely. The gas ones from trucks with 460's aren't enough strength internally. I converted to E4OD and upgraded the transmission to a 4R100 plus a few other goodies. BE SURE you get a DIESEL version of the E4OD or 4R! Borg Warner 1356 manual shift transfer case
Late to the party. I have rebuilt a few of those cases and that boss is most likely not drilled through. 4x4 question
Check the easiest things first, the shift lever mechanism outside the transfer case is known to let go. You can bypass it and put a vice grip directly on the case lever so pop it into H4 or H2. The shift pattern is a straight line at the case so it is pretty easy to unbolt the base of the lever...- SDEconVan

It can be done, I've done it. Be sure you're dealing with a diesel version of the E4OD. Changing the output shaft will throw all the tolerances out so you'll need to buy a set of snap rings of various thicknesses along with shims, depending upon whether the center support has been upgraded...- SDEconVan

C6 Diesel trans is tough but it's important to take care of it. Previous owner let this one go, when the van was being loaded onto the carrier, the rear wheels caught on the ramp, driveshaft twisted up, and back of the transmission broke off.
