what year is your truck,does it have the internally regulated alternator? if not feel the regulator. if the problem persists, try disconecting the plug on the alt. with the two wires coming out when you park it for the night and see if it still drains the batteries.
i came accross one when i was looking for a tach. it said it was good for any idi, but i dunno if it would work for these engines. i googled diesel tach and it came up cause it has a built in digital tach. i can't remember the name of the company though.

yep, wether you go with the cummins or the idi you gotta cut the cross member, but as long as you weld it back up good not a problem. maybey tomorrow i'll take a couple of pics of mine. the fordcummins website also has pics of a mod'ed cross member.
