Well good news.. Glad you got it running and sorry for the push pul start post. For some odd reason I thought you had a manual trans rig..
No fuel from injection lines (air)

Well it’s starting fine still but the surging is still there. It didn’t happen before it ran low of fuel. A couple times at idle, it sounded like it was going to stall until I lightly pressed the throttle.
Any ideas why it would happen right after running low? It definitely wasn’t doing this before.
I did notice the small engine style fuel filter right before the mr gasket pump looks to be partly collapsed inside. Perhaps that’s why, it’s starving fuel on occasion. Not looking forward to replacing that. I wish they had put a cutoff valve for changing that filter. It’s going to be a messy job.

That’s your problem right there. If there is soft line above stream of the filter use a pair of vice grips wrapped in electrical tape to cut off the flow then replace the filter
Sadly, there is only a tiny bit between the filter and the blue plastic line leading to the tank selection valve.
It might be a good way to test the valve. Switch it to rear and see if it still tries to flow beyond what’s in the line between the filter and valve. I was told the selection valve doesn’t work but I’ve never looked into it.
Of course on a Geo Metro I bought once, the lady said the non-existent air conditioning system would explode if charged according to her mechanic.
I guess it’s a weird coincidence that the filter went bad at the same time I got low on fuel. Maybe it was slightly frozen and just decided to give out right at that moment. Maybe even that very morning I drove the mile or so to fuel up.
I look at it every so often and the last time I looked (can’t remember exactly when, within the last month or two) it wasn’t collapsed like that.

The crud was already there. It could be it sucked up more. Looks like rust particles. That’s why they put a filter, so it wouldn’t ruin the pump.
Yep that fixed it. My tank selection valve might be good too. I heard it click with the flip of the switch. I set it to rear and barely had any fuel escape from the line. It took a few start and stalls to get the air out after the filter change, but it’s been fine since. No surging at all now. I need to carry a spare of those filters!

Why are you running that small GAS line filter??? Our engines have a very nice diesel fuel filter that works great.My guess is this "extra" filter picked up tank trash and caused a fuel system restriction making your engine stumble like you describe.
Because like I said, it has a Mr Gasket fuel pump. A previous owner put it there. There are tons of rust debris in the old filter. I saw a few go into the brand new filter right away too. It would ruin the fuel pump if it didn’t have a filter there to protect it.
It’s cheaper to replace a $5 filter than a $25-50 pump.
It runs fine with a non-collapsed filter. I’ve had the truck 10 or 11 months and who knows how old the filter was when I got it. So every 8-12 months for changing that filter isn’t bad.

That tank isn't long for the world if it's got that much rust in it, I'd think about changing it, or both, out pretty soon. I took out the middle tank on my truck and installed a 38 gallon rear tank. Cost me around $120.
It’s possible it’s rust from the rear tank which I never use. It already had a lot of rust in the filter when I got the truck. Maybe that’s why he was saying the switch didn’t work, he was lying to mask rear tank rot.
Perhaps the bit of junk that entered the new filter was some that backwashed out of the old filter into the line, then washed back with the new installed.
But I’ll keep that in mind. If the new filter fills up like the old then I’ll know it’s the front tank.
Here’s the fuel filter and pump setup so maybe it’ll make things clearer for those upset about the filter being there. A lot of reviews of those pumps say it dies within a few months. It’s probably from lack of filtering large debris from the tank.

I thought the 38 gallon rear eliminated the space for the spare tire? (it's twice as deep as the stock one). But I could be wrong
