I'm surprised that Mr gasket pump still works. I went through two of those in as many months on my last truck and finally ended up buying a 6.5 GM pump that never gave a problem. I think I still have another new 6.5 pump in my stock pile but on this new truck, I'm gonna do the carrier transicold pump in the engine compartment.

already have a 38 gallon rear tank
Nope that's the stock tank. A 38 gallon drops down below the frame about 6 inches. We don't carry our spares under the trucks up here in the north because they rust from all the salt and won't come out when you need it. I'm not sure if the spare could be moved down though.

Must be the filter. Or did you have yours filtered? It looked old when I got it almost a year ago.

I have a generic pump like your Mr, Gasket. I don't even run the thing unless I change the screw on filter that mounts behind the thermostat housing.

I had that same pump split the housing and dump 10 gallons of diesel on the road, it had a pre filter that came with the kit. I would carry a spare with you or upgrade.

I should try disconnecting the pump’s ground and see if the truck even runs without it. I’ve never tried. Not sure if the original lift pump is there come to think of it. I guess I need to check that first.

Edit: It is there but it isn’t hooked up. So the Mr Gasket pump is THE fuel pump on this truck. It’s been there for a good 7k miles since I got the tuck plus an unknown amount of miles before I got it. Those pumps must not be TOO horrible, or it’s an oddball very good pump.

I ran a Holley red first and when it fried, the truck wouldn't even run.
When the Mr gasket died, it would barely run.
Two things I would do if I were you. One, carry a spare pump!
Two, get a block off plate and remove the old mechanical pump.

Will do in March probably. Other expenses in the meantime.

Is the prefilter the metal part to the left of the pump in my pic? If so, I bet it clogs up fast and starves the pump. Vegas39 said his made the truck barely run when it died.

I wonder if the trick to using those pumps is to put that Napa 3002 filter like I have. How else can we explain over a year’s life (so far) on a pump that typically survives a month or two without the extra filtration? Luck? Or additional filtration most people don’t put?

Can’t explain yours splitting. Was it on the frame like mine or in the engine compartment? If engine, maybe it got too hot and exploded or something?

I'd use a Napa 3972 or 3270 filter for diesel if I ran an inline. Those small paper filters tend to collapse when the fuel gets colder, and thicker.

The 3972 is preferable since I can see if it’s having trouble. Thanks for the suggestion. Although I probably won’t see mid teen lows again until next year if then even. I didn’t expect to see it here. Usually it doesn’t get that cold here for as long as it did. That’s probably what did it in. I’ll get one in the meantime in a few months and keep it in the glove box just in case.

Edit: oh the info on 3002 even says not to use with diesel. Ok. I’ll get a 3972 soon and swap it out. I’ll keep the 3002 as an emergency spare since I already have it.
