my truck runs great, no smoke, no issues but I think my timing is retarded. I noticed when cold it ran much better with the advance on. The marks on the ip are about 1/8 in in the advanced position from the mark on block but why I read maybe it's worn and self retarding. As I do have the heatsoak hard start issue so I know it's worn. I jumped the cold advance solenoid and it seems to run a lot better, a lot more power and still sounds good. I'm curious if that's an indication if I need to get it timed and lastly would it be back to keep the cold advance activated until I replace the pump and time it?

How many miles are on the IP, is it the original? The timing marks where put on there at the factory for the original pump so they really don't mean much. If you have someone close that can time it, get that done. If the IP has a lot of miles on it, it could be time to replace.

That's an indication that you are probably due for a new injection system in the near future. I would recommend renting Gary's (icanfixall) timing meter if you want to check the timing. It may help the hard starting when hot prob, but it still sounds like it's due for a replacement if it's old & worn.

Unfortunately I have no idea on the miles but now that I'm driving it around I'm noticing my egts went up and it runs great. My issue before was even with the pump maxed out I couldn't get any smoke and my egt stayed super cool. Even at 10psi full throttle highest I seen was 800, freeway cruise was around 250, now on the freeway I'm over 300 and I'm getting a little smoke on acceleration but what's nice is my turbo seems to spoil a lot quicker?

Before you spend the money to time it, I would disconnect you advance jumper and then Advance the timing about 1/16", see what happens, certainly won't hurt anything.

You should get some clatter on a cold start up, then smooth out when it returns to 650 - 700 idle.

I just posted an idle video. With the advance jumper all the time I noticed it has a much more prenounced clatter than before which I take it is good. It runs a lot better

If you watch the video can you tell me if that sounds healthy to you? If so I'll remove the jumper and advance the pump slightly. Like I said it's running a lot better

X2 on sounding good and advancing it correctly. Just read this post and with your egts so low I would leave the wastegate hooked up since it seems you dont have enough fuel to match the boost. Make sure you arent loosing fuel pressure when at wot. The IP needs some positive pressure to feed the correct amount of fuel.

Advance the timing and unhook the cold advance, it doesn't advance it correctly for normal driving. Just 1/16 of a inch probably would make a good difference just make a mark where you are now so if needed you could go back. If heat soak and hard start are happening already I would defiantly recommend a pump in your future or start saving for one

Thanks everyone, I've been driving the truck all day and i haven't had to water down the injection pump once yet! Would the advanced timing help it start when hot?

I don't think you did like I told you to do. If you jumpered the Cold Advance Solenoid on the IP, take it off, then advance the IP that 1/16".

Energizing the IP Cold Advance Solenoid all the time is NOT good. There is a cam on the throttle shaft that advances the IP timing as the throttle (speed up) is advanced, Keeping the Cold Advance Solenoid energized all the time the IP timing is advanced fully, therefore the IP timing cannot advance anymore in relationship to throttle opening (speed). Do like I say and you'll get better response from the engine. Might even cure your hot start.

EDIT: The CAS IP cam should be at the position in the pic at Idle RPM.
