I've never done anything like this so I'm kinda clueless

i need to replace my push rods lifters rockers intake/exhaust valves
is this going to be too big a job for a ShadeTree mechanic?
should I go ahead and replace the head gaskets and Studs while I Have the Engine out?
Do I need to do any machining or is it pretty much just install new parts and go.

Valve seats need touched up, check valve guides for slop. The rest is install. New head gaskets and valley pan are a must, studs if adding a turbo. New rear main seal with wear ring. No gasket on oil pan, use Walker sealer, gasket maker or Hi temp RTV. Re-Oring the oil cooler if it's not been done before. Look for any real bad rust on freeze plugs. Pull one piston rod cap and main bearing cap, center main thrust is best to pull, check for excessive wear, all copper showing, replace them. Head bolt torque and Valley pan bolt torque is important when reinstalling. Don't have the 6.9 torque specs, but the sequence is the same as a 7.3. Pic below.

Thanks. I'll go ahead and add head studs cause I might Turbo again later on.
Dont know if I'll mess with oil pan. Probably just do the top end and leave the bottom untouched

Now would be a good time to install the updated 7.3 rockers. I was surprised to find that my 6.9 had them when I did head gaskets. The newer style eliminated the aluminum bridge that connected intake/exhaust rockers.

Yep I'll use what ever oldbull8 sends for now then when I have a little more cash I'll get the 7.3 Rockers.
I would like to do a Full Rebuild while I have it out but. Don't have that kinda cash right now so I'll do what I can now and the rest later.

I have some used 7.3 rockers I can part with. Fulcrums are still in good shape, minor wear from valve stem on the tips.

I'll snap some photos tonight. If memory serves, the ridge worn in from the valves stems is less than 5 thou.

Got to thinking about the above, don't know if the 6.9 rockers are the same as the 7.3. Pic below is what I have.

Yep that's what my 6.9 has in it. From what I understand, my engine has never been opened up prior to me owning it so it must have came from the factory with the updated rockers.

Thanks for the pics. OLDBULL8 has the 7.3 Style So I'll Just Go With Them.

How Much are you Looking to Get For Them?

Were the updated rockers ever put on a 6.9L by the factory? Don't think so, but it would be interesting to prove one way or another. I KNOW my '86 6.9L (2/86 build date )did NOT, because I have owned it since 7K miles.

It's not uncommon to see incremental changes in engine manufacturing... The 7.3 wasn't a clean sheet design, just an evolution of the 6.9, so I wouldn't be surprised to see 7.3 exhaust valve oil shields and rockers on the last 6.9s. Same with a few of the later 7.3s having "turbo" rods or blocks in N/A applications.
