Hey guys,

Looking to get a more tense sound out of my 85 without dual piping it. What would you suggest. Not sure straight pipe would be good for the motor. Truck has no turbo.

Thanks,
Cody

try starting it! :D
mufflers is a matter of opinion.
you can get a straight through design that minimizes flow restriction.
my buddy that bought my old F350 has a 7.3 and stock cross over piping.
after they come together, he installed 4" with no muffler, it sounds pretty damn good.
its all about the size of the piping.

I run 3.5" pipe through a straight through tractor muffler off of a 1066 International tractor. When I first got the truck it was straight piped and it was just raspy. Now I have an edge to the sound, but it isn't overpowering.

I like the Magnaflow stainless muffler for my NA trucks. The shortest one in 3" will do nicely. No muffler is just insane, but the Magnaflow will give you a nice deep, yet authoritative tone.

I think guys who want more noise out of their trucks should put a tape cassette of recordings from the movie 'Bullet' in their dash and roll their windows up. :idiot:

I once ran my truck open exhaust manifolds. It sounded pretty cool.

And then a few hours later it had a turbo, and it sounds much better. Best my truck ever sounded was when my downpipe slipped about 1/2" out of the turbine outlet.

I didn't want loud. We went with a different muffler at first but it castrated my truck. Put a flow on it and its power improved.

When I picked up my truck, it was loud. I don't like loud, don't like to gather too much attention. And this is why I put a tractor muffler on, it flows freely but also muffles the sound a bit.

If I had the money, I'd have gone Magnaflow, they sound great. But the setup I have is all I need for a turbo, which I don't have yet. But when I do get one, it will sound incredible, to me.

My rig used to have a 3 inch exhaust with magna flow muffler back when it was N/A. Sounded good but truck still had that "crackling" tone that these engines are known for. Didn't care for that much.
I decided to install a 4 inch straight pipe and use my ATS 088 turbo as a muffler lol. Truck no longer sounds like a big block gasser with glass packs. Sounds great and most of that crackling tone is now gone.

Don't stone me......

I actually miss the sound of a straight pipe non turbo. My Ole 6.2, and 350 (previous engine to 6.2) both dual straights. And 7.3 I had.
Had stacks on my psd for awhile. (They were free) Pretty quite in the cab with the windows closed. But windows open was like riding around in a deuce. Don't think I would do a straight pipe to stack again.
Now I'm at stock exhaust dumped at the end of the factory muffler. Too quite. Gonna up to 4" in front of tire exit.
Think I'll give aero turbine a try. I know, expensive. But should be worth it.
So now that the stacks are back on my brothers truck, he's tired of them also. Only been about a month or two. Lol

Pipe size makes all the difference in sound. I straight piped my truck and its 3" from the y back and it not terribly loud unless you put it to the floor. Normal cruising it actually not much louder then when I had a thrush muffler on it.

My buddy liked my setup so he decided to do the same to his 6.9 only instead of using 3" pipe he used 2.5" pipe. Good god man you wanna talk about loud! I can hear him from a half mile away its that loud and that's when hes just cruising. Driving his truck you almost have to scream to talk to each other. That's to loud for my taste!
