Did not expect an electric fuel pump to be such an improvement!

That pump needs to be vertical, The plunger will wear on the bushing more when horizontal.

I'm going to be doing one. It's one of the more common upgrades that we really DO need to have shown in our tech articles section. In an effort to more scientifically approach the fuel inlet presure PSI question, I've asked my pump guy to do some tests the next time we have a Moose Pump on the test stand, in order that we might ascertain at what presure does the IP start to feel the effects. We know 50 or 60 PSI is definitely in the problem zone, which rules out a lot of factory pumps, but we don't know exactly where the cut-off is for a precise recommendation. We do have a fair number of members running the Holley blue as well, which probably puts things safely into the 14 PSI range without issue. The Moose Pumps are being calibrated to go with the Holley Red, exactly at 7 PSI.

s really pretty much a moot point. The only lift pump that puts out more than the Holly blue that I can think of is a Mallory competition pump at 18 psi and it's not rated for diesel fuel
Electric fuel injection pumps are not in the same class as lift pumps. ( heck if you think those things will make a diesel injection pump act funny, you should see what happens if you try to use one to feed a real big carb, I made that mistake a whole bunch of years ago before I knew better ( hey, my buddy said the thing was a lift pump :backoff... Can you say runaway, Fuel everywhere, overloads the needle and seat and comes shooting out the bowl vent like a sprinkler...then came the flames :bail:fan:

When I converted the ranger to diesel, I made the mistake of trying to reuse the EFI type fuel pump. Literally inflated he fuel filter (same type as the GM 6.2). Lesson learned, and I ordered a low pressure pump instead.

Those EFI pumps can push a lot of pressure and even pull a decent vacuum.

Yep probably going to just put one of the sight glass style ones on it....

I have an extra sight glass I got from a vendor at infopop. Never installed it. It has 3/8" barbs on each end. $10 including shipping. If interested I can post a photo.

Mankypro, I'm in the process of researching a reliable electronic lift pump to replace my failing stock lift pump on my '89 Ford E-250 Club Wagon 7.3 IDI. Spent a few hours reading posts on various forums and have narrowed it down to the Airtex/Master pumps or a Walbro pump. Users have reported mixed reviews on both, but I can't seem to find anything guaranteed to be reliable unless I want to spend $400+, which I am unable to do.

It's been about two years since this post where you praised the Walbro pumps you're using - can you give me an update on how they are working out?

Transcold Carrier electric pumps. Group buy from Genlightening too. Or look for themon ebay. They show upfrom time to time. They are on the refrigeration units on most all refer trailers going OTR. They pull diesel from under the trailer at the spare tire all the way up to the top front of the rigs. Thats about a 12 ft suction pull...

Thanks for the swift response. The Transicold Carrier looks like a solid pump, but my concern was more to do with compatibly with WVO. For example, I spoke with a rep from Airtex who recommended against using his pumps for WVO, despite numerous reports from users on various forums claiming good results over thousands of miles.

Have you any personal experience with this or other electronic lift pumps that you can share with me? I've also heard the Facet pumps are reliable but again haven't been able to find much information on how well they hold up over time.

I can't help with any fuel but straight diesel... I don't run anything else in my rig... Post up this question on the bio fuel forum here..

So whats the optimum fuel pressure? I know anywhere from 4-7 is normal, and mine runs at 4 psi, often droping to 3psi with hard acceleration. would I benefit from a higher pressure, or , more importantly is it easier on the IP to run a higher psi (less wear?).

I pulled an electric pump from a 6.9 truck that had it pulling fuel after the lift pump and before the filter head on the motor. It's a small in-line unit, can I install it in the same location on my truck?

The only reason I've thought about an electric pump as when I cold start the truck if I don't give it a little throttle for the first second or two the truck will die - like it isn't getting enough fuel at idle.

That would be really good information to know. My thinking would be, but correct me if I'm wrong, that if you had a higher pressure feeding the pump, it would increase the amount injected by the pump. I might be wrong but it is just my thinking. It would just be good to know the limits of how much pressure would be too much to push into these injection pumps.

What is psi rating of the Transcold pump?
