Things are getting more expensive for sure. To top it off the CEO of Wallyworld was saying yesterday that they can't hold prices down much longer. He's expecting some significant price increases in the June or July timeframe. Yiipee!

I am running 4.56's right now but I have a set of 3.55's waiting in the wings. I've had them for a year now and just can't decide which way to go. Looking forward to your test results Goofy, especially your towing/hauling impressions.

Thanks or taking the time to report.

I found first gear WAY too low for anything useful. I would simply almost dump the clutch in second gear without any fuel and when teh clutch was fully engaged, away she'd go. I find we have too many retards and impatient **** holes here that don't like to wait for you to use first gear. If you don't prett much hammer it down when that light turns green, you are getting passed then cut off BAD in my parts.....too many "imports" from other countries living here.

So do you have a lower 1st gear in your zf5 or not? Seems like I remember you saying you do...

If people get tired of waiting for me to shift from 1st to 2nd, they are most welcome to bury my hitch in their radiator. Wouldn't bother me a bit. They are welcome also to suck up some nice smoke in their air conditioner or heater intake as well. Its fun running stoplight to stoplight. Everyone takes off a lot faster and leaves me in the dust, but I always manage to catch up.

I totally forgot to answer that! I think I do have the lower first gear. My transmission is either a 1996 or 1997 from an F-Superduty with the PSD in her.

5.72:1 vs 4.14:1? That's why I claim my first gear as USELESS in day to day driving. Moving around a parking lot, I would use first, but usually I never bothered with it. I should have a mint, low mileage first gear set when it comes time for a rebuild.

As far as trying to keep people behind you, or not worrying about them. They will run into you. And if the first car behind you don't make an attempt at passing you, the 3 behind him will.

I have had people pass me on gravel shouldr on a 100 series highway here the lilit is close to 70 MPH. I have had people jump curbs, blow through lit up crosswalks with people in them, pass on sidewalks, blow red lights, simply get beside you and start merging over trying to nerve you off the road. I have seen it ALL! And if they do hit you, the cops won't do an effin thing about it! I proved it when I had a guy pass me on a double solid line....2 lane road, at 6 am in a snow storm in the dark. Buddy loses control, and hits my truck. Walked away wit some damage and no tickets issued. I tried to fight it, but I never got ANYTHING out of the deal. A tweaked tie tod and a marked up bumper.

This was all in the pickup....you should see what I see in the big trucks!!

Ok, I ran a couple tanks through the 3.55's and came up with this.

With the WINTER tires and 3.55's I was averaging 19.5 MPG. This is a 2.5 average MPG increase. On the highway ONLY I could JUST touch 21 mpg ever so lightly. That is a 2 MPG increase.

But this weekend I REALLY babied it around and came up with a GREAT number....best yet since I bought it I think.

I put the highway tread summer tires on, pumped them up to door tag spec and then 5 psi more and filled the front tank. Winter fuel still remember.

I drove a total of just under 300 miles (480 kilometers) on a grand total of 60 liters (15.9 gallons) for a GRAND total of 22.56 MPG Canadian.

Just WAIT until I start running the summer fuel. I should also add I stuck a bottle of seafoam in that tank....might have a little something to do with the 22.5 MPG on winter fuel lol.

You dropped about 500 RPM then didn't you? 14 or 1500 at 55MPH? Getting under 1800 makes a big difference in fuel economy.

poured in the fuel tank or the oil. do not pour it down the intake.

the difference between winter fuel and summer fuel for those cold blooded types is the winter fuel was a lower gel point than the summer fuel, but doesnt get the best mileage. summer fuel gets better mileage but will gel up around 20 degrees.

I'm planning this same swap (4:10 ->3.55).

It looks like my truck will pull down ~15mpg, untimed (hash marks lined up), but it sucks when you're topped out at 65.

My only concern with the 3.55's is starting off. I already know my 2nd gear synchro is *****'d, and I don't want to pull the tranny yet

funny, cause i am swaping the other way.... need better gearing for the 40's.

I'm only running 35's. If I wasa replacing the tires, and stepping up to the 37's I want, it might be different LOL.

In a couple of years, the 3.55's won't matter, cause I'll have a high power plant in place of the idi :sly

the 3.55's arent to bad with the big tires. i dont tow with the truck so no worry there. but some hills around here with the speed limit being low(35 or 45) i have to shift into third to keep up to speed. i can hold 55 all the way up it if i stay in 4th.

I have a complete set of 3.55's sitting in my garage...but, I'm not confident enough to install them myself (never done it before) and shops want $250 an axle to install them. Sigh...
