I have put my money in Ramsey 9000lb winches in my trucks over the years and they have brought home the bacon with minimal maintenance.
I totally agree Ramsey is top shelf - but pricey. If you use it a lot its the only to go,hands down.
I just wanted to add one more thing here. I ran a welding cable from the battery in the front of my F250 to the rear,and one Through the grill.Next I got a couple of the electric forklift battery connector plug in (they come in different amp ratings. I had a battery mounted on any trailer I had charged by the vehicle with a 10 Gage separate cable. I welded a square receiver tube on the trailer ant to my cattle catcher mounts. I could move the winch any where in a minute -un plug,pull the pin , remove the winch & put it where I needed it and no problems with voltage drops & not enough power to run the winch.
I still say bang for the buck (Thanks Brad) super winch has the customer service -afford ability to get it repaired (remember every repair is a rebuild) and is more affordable for the casual user & as i said I have dragged dead 4000 lb + tractors on a trailer with the rear wheels locked using a snatch block-(on one tractor I did use 2 snatch blocks) So when $$$ is short there are ways maybe not as nice as the big dollar winch but it can be done.

My dad picked up an 8500lb Superwinch From Farm and Fleet on sale for $325 on sale. He also applied for a FnF credit card and got an additional 10% off. The regular price on the winch is $415 or so. So total price out the door was only about $300. I made a mount on for a receiver hitch using a piece of 9" C-Channel and a piece of 2" square tubing. We have a receiver on our trailer also for using the winch.

This basically what I did with my 8000lb winch, it works great and with the truck on high idle (toggle switch controlled) there is 15V going to the winch. The plugs are the same as an electric forklift uses.

just my experience: my mile marker (12k lbs) lasted a month before the solenoid box failed. then i think i used it 3 times in 2 years. now it's dead. i have to drop my bumper to get to it to pull it apart.
get a good winch or don't bother.

might wanna look into promark winches. they were gorilla winches but changed the name. i got mine ready to bolt on 12k wireless and corded remote shipped to my door for 410 $. didn't expect much for that cheap but its a beast and has been trouble free and i use it every weekend . i have it mounted just in front of my gooseneck ball so i can use it to winch stuff on my trailer and pull rigs out when im wheelin .
it doesn't compare to the 20k tulsa pto in my wheelin truck but with 2 optimas and a deep cycle semi battery behind it , it does everything i need it to and i never use a snatch block on it . drug a 17k 4x4 petibone loader through a 3 foot snow drift dead weight to get it unstuck for example . i was shocked to say the least i didn't think it was gonna do it.

I'vee seen the results of a Chev HD3500 and a wire rope that broke. the cab of the truck was almost cut in half.
hydraulics is no joke when wire rope is involved.

I have an extra Ramsey like you are talking about. It is hydraulic and WAY stronger than a 9000lb electric winch.
I had my ramsey on a 1995 F450 Dynamic wrecker I parted out. This winch would get the job done every time. I have pulled out semis, 1 tons with 44" mudders buried up to the mirrors, myself, cars and lots of steel scrap chunks.
The only drawback is you need a hydro pump of some sort and a simple hyd control valve.
I would sell this Ramsey for $500.
I have a Mile Marker 8000lb elecric winch mounted in the bed of my 1990 F250 6.9 zf5 4x4. I bought the winch from 4wheel parts for $400. I use it for dragging scrap into my bed and onto the trailer. I do it for a living nowadays and the winch itself is stout and rugged but the control box is chitty. The connection for the remote only lasted 2 weeks.
I started just sticking the big wires to a battery in my bed. That has been working for about 6 months now with near daily use. But it is a toy compared to a hyd Ramsey.
The MileMarker electric and Ramsey hyd take up about the same space and mount the same, but the Ramsey is twice the weight.

Now i had BAD luck w the Gorilla(promark) winch. I put a 2500lb winch($120) on my 4 wheeler to raise and lower the plow. It lasted about 1.25 seasons. I put a 2500lb superwinch($140) on to replace it 3 years ago and not one problem.
Like i said, bang for the buck, SUPERWINCH.
Amd like Calvin said ramsey makes some tough stuff. I couldn't kill the ramsey winches on any of the roalbacks or wreckers I opperated

Thanks guys!!! Thanks for all the info, and thanks for the links. I think I have decided against any new winches from HF or TSC or any think like that. Best prices I'm finding for a 3K winch are roughly $120. Even if I could find one for $100, I can get a Superwinch UT3000 for $120 which I think would be a better value. I noticed that HF sells 50' rolls of 3/16 cable for $10, and 1/4" for $20. I'm thinking that I'll pick up a couple spools of 1/4". I can hook them directly to the truck, and use them to drag with, or hook a winch to.
My question now is what size do I really NEED to look for. The 3000 lb winches seem to run just a little over $120. The 4,000 and 4,500 lb winches are $200+. Am I really gaining that much by spending almost twice as much for the bigger winches. Even when the spool is full, the 3K winches are pulling over a thousand pounds, which will likely be more than anything I'm ever going to drag out of a ravine. Throw in a 8K snatch block, and I should be able to drag out some decent size tree tops. The only thing I don't like about the 3K winches is that they have 3/16 cable. Even still, if I needed to use it to get the truck out, I can anchor a spool of 1/4" to something, and then use a snatch block with the winch.
Thoughts or opinions?
