So, I know some of you guys dont like black smoke, thats all good and its your opinion and I respect that, but I think my black smoke is telling me something.....or lack there of of black smoke. As of late my black smoke output has gone down. Over the past couple of weeks, it seems like at WOT in 4th doing 60mph there is less and less black smoke emitted, per the side mirror. Maybe I'm imagining things, but my EGT's have been getting lower and lower as of late. There is this 6% 1/3 mile hill that there is a corner you come off at the bottom, and then accelerate all up the hill. Now before I could hit 1200* after getting to the top of the hill. The other day I went up it hard, right after the corner I went through 3rd gear real fast, shifted into 4th, and went WOT all the way up the hill, I was up to about 68mph at the top, from about 30mph at the bottom. My EGT's at the top were just barely over 1000*. My boost was way high though, maybe that was the cause of the low EGT's, I saw 9psi at the top and backed off, I gotta conserve my head gaskets until summer.

So I guess my question would be, can the fuel adjustment screw back out? I mean there is lock tight on it to begin with, maybe after tightening and without replacing the lock tight, the screw has backed out some. Or maybe I'm just completly crazy cookoo  :rotflmao .

Fuel filter gets my vote too.
Anytime on a diesel it starts feeling like you're standing on a marshmallow when you go to gas on it, first place to look is either water in the filter or a new fuel filter time. They have to be pretty clogged up before those dash lights go on. Once you get your butt-o-meter tuned in, you'll get the feel for it. Always carry a couple of spares. Never know when you'll get a bad batch of fuel ( *cough burns brothers cough*):D

More air going into the motor will cool down the air going out..... Black smoke is money being wasted. Kinda like buying fireworks for the 4th of July. You just burn up your money...:dunno

This may be a little far fetched but is it significantly colder there than normal? It may be just that the air density is up enough to allow more of your fuel to burn. That would also explain why you are seeing more boost and lower egt's. Like having an intercooler.

Fuel filter????

Could very well be that, hopefully. I'm a little ashamed to admit it, but I've never replaced one on my truck. Dont know why, I even have one sliding around in my tool box. I just need to figure out how to get that old one off of there, isnt there some special tool that can do it? Or just a filter wrench? I have the biggest filter wrench Napa had for sale in the store and its still to small. Could be water in my fuel to right? My fuel water seperator is stuck open I think, I mean with my truck parked, it will leak some fuel out the drain hose, just a couple of drops, but you can see where they landed on the concrete. I should by a Racor kit for it......just another thing to do.

I know I know, but this time my black smoke came in handy, it showes me something is has gone awry in my truck.

Temps have been lower, but that day it was in the low 40's, and I've driven it up that hill at the same temps, at WOT, and have gotten to over 1200*

sounds like a fuel filter to me. does it seem low on power? and how old is the lift pump?

and just for s+gs how old is the injection pump and is it a 6.9 or 7.3 pump?

did you change fuel stations or additives?

simple things first.... before you run out and change an IP check the fuel supply

Make the run several times to to confirm your results

As long as you have a replacement filter on hand, just punch a long screwdriver through the filter to get the leverage to remove it. I do this on oil filters that are too tight or inaccesible for a wrench to turn.

Any parts store carries the 6.9 filter on the shelf.

It doesnt really seem low on power, but the black smoke has been decreasing ever so slightly every day, so maybe its just to little to notice, and its added up over time. I will try to do some more runs up it and see what happens. Same fuel station, filled up, has a good strong dose of PS in it.

Russ I'll send you a pm :D .
