I want to purchase some new head bolts and Mahle appears to be the only game in town. Country of origin for the bolts is unavailable but found some on ebay that were made in Taiwan. Anybody have problems with the Mahle head bolts? Other manufacturer? I'd rather do studs but pulling the engine is more than I can bite off right now.

Studs can be done in frame, it’s just more of a pain than pulling the engine IMO.

I'm aware of the issues on the passenger side with the heater box--does the driver's side have a similar issue? The clearance for reinstalling the heads onto studs looks tight on the driver's side. I'm sure pulling the engine would make all this easier but I've never pulled an engine and I have to be done and buttoned up relatively quickly since October is often the beginning of the rainy season. I love doing something for the first time but I'm always pretty slow what with the learning curves and all. Drivers side is hotdog down a hallway. Lots of room.
I did my heads in chassis, I had to take apart the half shell of the HVAC box for clearance, then use a rubber band to hold the head bolts together so I could pull the head with a cherry picker. Same way during install when I did my studs.

Not always. I remember on the earlier models with a C6, the shift linkage is in the way and won't let you remove one of the head bolts. The push rods can all slide by, barely. You may be able to disconnect the linkage at the steering column and rotate the rest out of the way. I don't know because I've never tried. If the firewall insulation is falling down, that can also cause clearance issues.
