Hello folks! Just got an automatic 330K+ 94 F350 Dually, that is having some severe smoking issues.
Truck has a popping misfire sound under acceleration that clears up when in the top gears. Replaced the fuel filter, injector return line kit, and the thermostat. Truck also intermittently stumbles and stalls out when coming to a stop. And will crank but not start unless I play with the fuel tank selector switch.
I love this truck and want to keep her, but for now, I'm looking for a motor. Going to hunt down a compression tester to rule that out.
Video link attached.

Have you tried cracking each injector line to see if one of the injectors is bad? I would do that first then move onto the compression test. On the starting , is gp system ok also install a clear return line at filter head to see in getting air. I would also suggest a check valve in the fuel line before the mechanical fuel pump.

Can't help you with the selector switch right now.

But before you go and do too much to it, try turning the Injector Pump up, by about the thickness of a dime.

This is kind of confusing wording Seladoor. You meant to say to try advancing the pump timing by about the thickness of a dime. Judging by the amount of smoke that's coming out of the exhaust, I'd agree with advancing the timing. It may not help, but it probably won't hurt either. Your missing is intermittent. Usually an intermittent miss or knocking noise is a fuel issue like a bad injector. Since you didn't mention anything about the history of the injector pump and injectors, it may be time to replace them all. I hate to give you the bad news, but we all have to do that occasionally. The stalling when coming to a stop sounds , to me, like a weak lift pump although the selector valve doesn't usually have any effect on it starting. I think that your truck has multiple issues and will take some time to straighten them all out. The good news? You've come to the best place for advice on these trucks and engines. Welcome.

I don't understand the confusion. Who would read "turn the injector pump up", and think "retard the timing'?

Correct terminology is important. This is a good illustration of that.

I'll try to remember this.

Hey thanks for all the tips and advice.
So Salahdoor, your saying to advance the pump a little? That's by turning it to the passenger side, right? I will try that when I get off work today.
So I did the cracked injectors line test over the weekend and each one affected idle.
And I don't know much of the history on this truck as I bought it wrecked from an auction and drove it down from Atlanta..... yes I am a litle bit insane, haha.
It pulled my 99 Jeep XJ on a dolly and it felt like she wasn't even back there!

Yes. Advance the timing by turning the pump toward the passenger side. Try just the thickness of a dime, first. Check out where the marks are before you start. Get a pic of that, and post it please.

If you can't find them, (For some reason mine was actually filed off!!!), make your own.

Mine was loping badly, and constantly smoking. Even after warmed up. I advanced by the thickness of a dime. Made some difference but not enough. Ended up going a total of 2 and a half dime thicknesses. Made a HUGE difference. Thing starts up right away. With the only smoke being right at startup. Goes away in seconds.

I'm no expert, but I don't think that's right. She is running a bit too retarded it seems.
So I set it to about the same distance, but advanced.... and the smoke is gone!
Guys, I cannot believe it was that frigging easy!
I just ordered a water pump (could move the fan side to side and it has a drip), and am going to the parts yard this weekend for all the body parts.
Again, thanks for all the input guys, and a special thanks to Selahdoor!
I didn't even bother with a compression test, and will do one when I eventually put in a new set of injectors.

I'm glad you got it running better. if the water pump has noticable play, it's time to replace it for sure. Although it probably won't, I'm always afraid that it will completely give out, at this point, and take out my radiator. God knows those aren't cheap!
