Going to be taking the truck to a shop sometime this week.

(Wagley Creek Automotive. In Sultan, Wa. I'll give a review afterward.)

One of the things I am going to have them take a look at is the transmission problems.

The "off" light on the shifter stalk is blinking. Shifts were VERY harsh, before I got the truck to a level spot, and finished filling up the trans fluid. Not quite so harsh after that. Almost normal, but a little harsh.

The previous owner said that when they stopped driving it, it would not shift into overdrive. That it would kind of shake or rumble, and never actually go into OD.

The light wasn't blinking at that time. And if they just pushed the button and turned OD off, So then the light would light and stay lit. it would drive normally. Just with no OD. Now, I can't even get that. It blinks and continues to blink, so i CAN'T just turn it off, no matter how, when, or how many times I push it.

He was afraid it was the torque convertor. I am not so convinced.

I have been reading a lot about this problem. I am at least mostly confident that it is probably an electrical problem, or a sensor problem. At most, maybe a valve inside the trans pan.

What I need is a comprehensive overview of how the overdrive system, and the E4od itself, works.

What are ALL the sensors that might have a problem? (Even if not directly related to this.) And maybe later, how would I test them? (Pretty sure Wagleys will know how to scan for codes, and will do that, first thing.)

What is the valve inside that might have a problem? Etc.

How would those problems affect it? How would they affect each other?

Can anyone take the time to write out such an overview for me?

And maybe a logical list of what to check, in what order, etc? Something I can pass on to Wagleys?

I really need the comprehensive overview, for my own understanding.

The better I understand it, the better I will be able to deal with someone else working on it. LOL

And having a list and order for testing, might be helpful to them.

there's a bunch of good articles here. I adjusted the sensor on the IP and soldered in a new pig tail
it's also possible for faulty trailer wiring and flashers to prevent OD from working if the computer thinks you're hitting the breaks.

I removed an electric trailer brake control, and all of a sudden some things that had never worked, started working. LOL Like the "wait to start" light...

Maybe that was the difference between the "off" light flashing. or being able to be turned off and on?

While I can't type out the the entire "how does the E4OD do its thing" explanation, I can say that the torque converters that Ford put in the 7.3's from the factory were not up to the job, and many problems stem for the factory TC failing. The E4OD can have other issues too, so the best thing to do is to connect a simple code reader to it and see what the stored codes are. I am not an E4OD expert - just had my own share of troubles with mine that were eventually fixed with help from a couple of the resident E4OD experts (@trackspeeder ) on here.

I guess I should narrow it down.

I don't need the info on the internals. Except maybe the one vale that is affected by what I think is the FIPL.

I just need a quick overview.

This sensor does this. The trans does that when it isn't working right. Etc...

You start the truck, the trans looks for... what? A PCU? Where's that PCU? What does IT do? What does it look at? What does it look FOR? What happens if it doesn't get the right signal from this sensor? Or from that sensor? Etc...

To make it a little easier. OD OFF light flashing means there are codes stored. You need to pull them to find out what is going on. You will not have OD with this light flashing.

From the "previous owner" note. The rumble in OD is most likely the converter lock up clutch slipping. They chatter when they slip. Just before it fails, you can get this in third gear.

If you want a comprehensive list for the E4. You will need the factory manual. Not the ATSG manual.
You will have plenty to read.:D

quick and dirty check, you can try this before you pull codes . change TECA relay. when I bought my truck it threw all kinds of random codes, can t remember which. after much checking and replacing MLPs and connector ,FIPL, and studying wiring diagram changed TECA and fixed all problems. Haven t touched trans since except to change fluid. There was unused relay beside TECA relay in fusebox underhood. Hope this helps

There’s a guy on several of these type forums, Mark Kowalsky (sp?), he’s a former Ford transmission engineer. Not sure if he’s on this one but he’s known to be very helpful and knowledgeable not to mention that his previous help to others includes lots of technical descriptions, diagnostics, etc.

Threre’s several tear down/rebuild threads on the bronco forums that are good references for when you need a pic or more to go along with what you’ve read about.

Looking on transgo’s website, you will find a number of tech articles that describe problematic symptoms of the e4od, what’s happened and then their recommended solutions. Similar info on sonnex’s site as well.

Not to dismiss electrical issues on a nearly 30 year old platform thats had numerous owners but most of the e4od problems are rooted in mechanical failures of the converter clutch and or pump failures. Those primary issues typically trickle down into the rest of the trans if they aren’t managed quickly.
