Horn issues

If the ground cam is missing it may be grounding through the key in switch dodad that turns the door chime on.

That might be the whole issue there.

add a ground from the aluminum bracket to one of the 10mm bolts holding the gasket to the firewall and see if that makes a difference.

Jumper cables directly from the battery to that aluminum bracket make no difference.

Jumper cables directly from the steering shaft to the battery OR to the steering gear ALLOW the horn to work.

It definitely is a bad ground then, looks like I'll have to pull the wheel to find out why.

While time has taught me never to think a problem is fixed without ample time for it to break again, it APPEARS we have a winner...

That little copper contact on the signal cancel cam on the column on the LEFT is ONLY on cruise equipped trucks from the factory (or so it seems). THAT is what is referred to as the "ground brush" in the manual @laserjock posted.

Notice the empty hole on the same cam on the column on the right? That is a NON-cruise column.

After removing the copper contact from the column on the left and installing it in the column on my truck (and verifing contact, and sanding the steering wheel for good connection)...

It seems to work!

I'll update you if it decides to make a liar out of me in a few days.

Dang, my timing is awesome. After your first post my first thought was those copper brushes being too short or otherwise not working right... but that doesnt help now lol.

I have to give you props for your persistence though-- very few people care this much about a functional horn, lol!

State inspections can change your priorities. I had to get mine working before I passed inspection. Fortunately for me it was just the relay. Chillman has had a much more involved solution.

Oh roger that I always forget about all that stuff. The most strict non-commercial inspections we have here in Western WA are hood-closed emissions tests. That's it. I'm basically flabbergasted by the crap some of you guys have to put up with...it makes the roads safer and that's good.
And I'm in unincorporated King County meaning the state/county/city never sets an eye or hand on my vehicles...ever. Not even emissions!

I didn't particularly care (never really use it) until March when my inspection is up except for a couple days ago I had a small SUV try to merge into my front bumper. Lucky for THEM I have good brakes! How do you have a blind spot that hides a crew cab dually??? Probably didn't bother to look.

Yes people are so stupid they have a blind spot big enough to hide a crew cab dually that is painted bright orange with flashing lights and honking horn I had someone midday try to merge into the bed of my truck then have the balls to flip me the bird I almost ran the subaru out back over for principal but my old beat up Ford is worth more to me than some dreadlocked , sandle wearing hippy

There's been a couple times in retrospect I really should have let the accident happen.

I was backing the work truck into a subcontractors parking lot from the road one day. Now mind you this is an International with a 28 foot flatbed, probably 32 feet long ok? This clown decides he doesn't have to wait for me to get out of his way and flys behind me with his horn going. It might not have been worth it, but some people just need to learn their lesson the old fashioned way if you know what I mean.
