Ok the detents were the problem. Just have to reset them again and its good to go.

ZF 5 Speed Detents

Is there any reason why you couldn't just drill the detents out and then tap the hole and use a small hex plug to hold the spring in? Dan: dunno

That would work perfectly and if I knew this would have been a ******* problem, I would have done it that way while it was apart.

Yeah if you had threaded plugs in there, you could adjust the dentent tension from inside the cab without having to pull the transmission, or at least there is plenty of room in my truck to do it with a 3 inch body lift.
