I had a set of new BB's in my spare motor so I decided to install them in my 91. I pulled all eight BB's out of the 6.9 and 7 of the D's out of the 7.3 easily without any trouble--got to the VERY LAST ONE and tink tink tink Snap! The end is stuck in the head and refuses to budge.

What now? I don't know the history of my 7.3 and it has cavitated twice now--I really don't trust it to be honest. My spare 6.9 is almost brand new from international. Should I install head gaskets and studs in the 6.9 and swap it in? Thanks for ideas.

I would have gone with the 6.9 in the beggining, just because of the cavitation issues. You can fix the 6.9's weak points easily, but cavitation is iffy.

I had the same thing happen when I replaced the injectors in my 7.3. The "deep" end of the injector broke off, way down in the hole. I replied on the ever-knowledgeable Towcat for direction.

The "broken" end should be threaded, and it simply came unthreaded in the hole. So, just grind off the threads which hold the injector in the head, slide it down the hole, start turning and thread it into the stuck portion. As soon as It's threaded into the "stuck" lower portion that will break loose, and you can draw the whole thing out.

See the picture, if I can attach it from my hard drive.

That's a good idea for getting the end out ;Sweet

I was pissed off enough that I started ripping the motor out. If it wasn't for that -cuss-cuss-cuss-cuss ATS slip coupler on the turbo up pipe there is a good chance I'd have the engine out by now

I hate to say it but I am getting a parts list together for a 6BT swap. If that's the case I will have a 088 turbo system and a brand new South Bend Clutch along with a bunch of other crap on the market for those interested. We'll see I may just put the 6.9 in after I cool off a bit LOL

A good rest and some favorite beer can make very good decisions. I personally don't drink anything stiffer than Diet Dr Pepper but thats just me... Y'all know what works for you. A repaired 6.9 is way cheaper than swapping out motors... I think we need a help section done up in the U tube fashion....

Good call, but I don't think anything on Youtube can help me with my problems! :rotflmao A psychotherapist maybe  LOL

I'll weigh out my options once I cool off. Its irritating when 15 injectors come out easily and the 16th is seized and snaps off--just my luck. If someone can convince me that my 3 row radiator will cool my 6.9 (cuz it won't even think about cooling the 7.3) I'll stud the 6.9 and throw it in. Otherwise I look at it like $700 Rodney Red or $700 Ford Cummins adapter and I wouldn't need a bigger radiator :dunno

Sorry to hear!

It's hard to pass up a free 6.9 but the 6BT in a CC is the way Ford should have done it.

Don't be scared of removing injectors that have been in a motor for 2,3 or 4 lifetimes. They mostly just turn out easily. One in 16 like posted is no big thing but... If you don't know the tricks foe getting the bottom section out it can be tuff. Grinding off the large threads in the injector has been a great idea here for years. I bought a Rotunda tool kit off ebay that had one in it. Check the injector bores carefully for carbon buildup. When you find this then check the seat carefully under the copper washer in the head. If any cuts are found then you need to use a seat reamer to cut a new seat. No amount of crushing in a new copper gasket will seal the damaged seat. Way too much compression and heat in that area. There are several members that have these seat reamers....

I changed my injectors at 126k and needed a slide hammer to remove two of them.

I have a 3 row radiator in my truck and it works just fine. Been in there over a year and not had a single problem with heat, even pulling a 25' camper through the mountains riding the redline for several hours.

I made an old injector in to a slide hammer friendly tool as well, works great....Thread it on and haul it out...LOL....I had one un-screw in my 6.9 when I changed the injectors a few months ago.

I brought an old slide hammer home from work. I'm going to give that a shot before I unbolt the trans and motor mounts. I guess I just cut an old injector off right under the big treads and weld a nut there to thread the slide hammer into? :dunno I'll figure something out hopefully. The hole looks like total crap and not trying to be pessimistic but I'm having my doubts :D I just noticed that the injector that broke was a BB... Cool. Mix matched injectors--how did I miss that?! No wonder the thing ran like dog poop -cuss

After a lot of thinking and talking and more thinking and talking I decided the 6.9 is probably going to be the best option. I can replace gaskets, install studs (holy crap their expensive $$$$$) and put in new O-rings for the oil cooler while its out and also weld in a bung in the pan for a oil temp gauge while the motor is sitting on a stand.

Yep, just weld a nut on an the other half and yank it out....Worked great for me, 2 or 3 light smacks and it was out...It's just carbon build up holding it in there.

miss matched injectors is not that big a deal its more in what shape they are in and how they flow.
