i just bought a 86 with the 6.9 and I'm having trouble keeping it running. it'll start sometimes and run and idle but other times it'll just crank and crank. also when you give it gas and let off it'll die but if i let off slow it'll stay running. i noticed the hard line coming from the filter housing to the back of the injection pump is leaking on either end could cause my problems also it seems to idle low. where can i get this hard fuel line

Does it have a tach? Idle could be set too low.
You shouldn't need a new line, just the "olive."

Good Morning Ya'll.
Take that filter to IP line off and replace the seal on each end. It takes 5/16" ID. You can cut a 1/4" long piece off a diesel fuel hose and use that or stack a couple of o'rings in there. You have to stop that leak, that's where your hard start is probably coming from, fuel is draining back, then you have to crank to get all the air out. The old seal comes out hard, use a dental pick.

Your glow plugs probably need to be replaced for the hard start, IP may be done as well. Once the internals wear there is a lot of bypass inside and it is tough to build up enough pressure to keep the engine running. External leaks should be fixed, but are usually not critical.

How are return lines...could be leaking air still also is the factory water seperator on fjre wall by booster still inline in fuel system???

Well I got it to run yesterday and it ran well I cracked all the lines and it finally started. I figured out it definitely need a new accelerator cable because I put it to the floor and only get to about 35 mph and I have to let off the gas to get it to shift. I went out this morning and to see if it would fire off again and no luck so now I'm confused as to why it won't start again since last night it ran great I could **** it off let it sit a couple hours and it would start up again

Heres your issues. Air is leaking into the fuel system causing long cranks to refill the fuel system,. Think about your fuel system as a straw in a soda. Put your finger over the end and pull the straw out. Nothing leaks out but let go and all of the sodas leaks out. Thats exactly our fuel systems. They need to be leak free. How long did the turck sit before you purchased it. Why did it sit. How many miles are on the injection pump .. Try replacing the rubber hose from the frame to the mechanical lift pump in the fuel system. Its the short hose usually found at the passenger side under the alternator and vacuum pump area. They do wear out and leak air. Then fuel runs back to the tank. It can suck the filter nearly dry. That hard line needs to be leak free too. I see you posted you fixed that but try snugging up the brass nuts a little more. Also those ends of the hard line MUST fit into the companion fitting for best seal. They basically are a vibration damper in the fuel system.
