In another thread we were talking rpms. I was told that mine should only do 3300rpm. Mine will do 3900. I know that this ain't the greatest for engine longivity but I'm not worried about that. If someday I replace my injection pump can the new one be set up @3900 too?

There is a governor spring in the pump that regulates RPM and where pump defuels at IIRC Some GM pumps have a higher RPM and guys use those springs to squeak out more RPM.

Why though would you want to wreak havock on your engine by twisting it so hi of RPM? You will get more life at the lower RPM of 3200..

Just sayin..

I don't run it up there often but its nice to be able to do so. Mines gutless till 3000 then it screams up to 3900 real fast.

The truck was used to tow a travel trailer from az to ak a lot. I was told anyway. The pump was Rebuilt in anchorage and I assume they turned up the fuel and rpm for more power.

That makes sense to me...and, unless you get a pump builder like Mel or you have someone rebuild the pump you have now, it won't be set up for the higher RPM's by default...you'll have to ask them to do it.

BTW, I'm with Al...running it up to that RPM is not something that you really should be doing on a regular basis. The weak spot is the valve springs...someone who'll go nameless on here decided he wanted to drive his diesel like a g@$$er and put a 4500 RPM spring in his pump. I don't remember exactly what RPM the valves started floating at, but they DID float (funny thing is, the guy tried to claim that there weren't any ill effects, even though you could hear the valves floating in the video :rolleyes)...and, even at the stock RPM setting, the valve keepers aren't the best, to the point where my uncle's stepfather had a valve get swallowed on the truck that is now mine.

IF you do the other work to support high rpms, I don't see a problem.
Ie: 910 valve springs, etc, etc...

What's funny is that they sanded the #1 injector line so they used a pulse to set the timing. But they had it @2atdc@2000rpm. No amount of fuel or rpm will make up for that. I'm betting that a stock pump with the timing up would outrun the modified pump with retarded timing. LoL

It did sound pretty neat though! What happened to him....?

Although I agree with the action of building an engine to take higher RPM's if you need to run it there for a good reason, however, in my neighborhood the phrase "engines wear to the square of the RPM" always holds true. More rpm's equals shorter life. Build em to run hard and high revving if you need to go fast, but I'd rather have low speed torque to do the work AND be long lasting ;Sweet
