The ZF6 doesnt have a double overdrive....

It just has a better split between the 2 3 4 gears. I think fifth is 1:1 and 6th is very similar to a overdrive gear on a ZF5

But I dont see what the advantage of doing all that work is when you can put a ZF5 in. The Zf6 has .72 OD and the Zf5 has .76. Not that big of difference at all.

ZF 5-speed wide ratio (460 gasser)
1st = 5.72
2nd = 2.94
3rd = 1.61
4th = 1.00
5th = 0.76

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

ZF 6-speed
Low = 5.79
1st = 3.31
2nd = 2.10
3rd = 1.31
4th = 1.00
5th = 0.72

If you've ever looked at a ZF6 shifter knob, it goes L,1,2,3,4,OD. As said, it has a better ratio spread between L-3. A bit confusing I know

I always thought that the zf6 would be a good tranny for mouintain driving, but not much more than that.

Also, not every thing you read on the net is true!!

Forgot to mention that I've owned a '00 PSD with a ZF6, a '97 with a S5-47 ZF5, and a '90 IDI S5-42 ZF5.

The ZF6 was obviously the superior tranny of them, but the S5-47 ZF5 was an awesome unit, with just as good of gear spread. I'd recommend a '95-'99 S5-47 ZF5.

Here's the Diesel 'close ratio' S5-47 ZF5

1st Gear: 5.08
2nd Gear: 2.60
3rd Gear: 1.53
4th Gear: 1.00
5th Gear: 0.77
Rev Gear: 4.66

Yes, the diesel close ratio ZF5's have a 0.77 overdrive, while the gasser ZF5's have a 0.76 O/D.

I have driven both a lot empty and loaded. The ZF5 is much easier to drive regardless IMO.

The ZF6 takes so much more force to push the pedal in, atleast on the one I drive and it is very hard to drive smooth. I am always bouncing around shifting gears when loaded on the 6 speed. Its like they are too close haha

what about the 6 speed that cummins uses? someone has to make an adaptor for that...i think. and i believe that they have a higher final drive too
