Hello All!

I'll be towing a 8500# trailer behind my new to me '90 F250 XLT 7.3IDI E4OD Needless to say, I've been shopping transmission coolers. We in Florida for the winter, so I'm not sure if I need a an oil thermostat. Of course a stacked plate style cooler is the only way to go. I've been looking at the Dorman 918-216 which, I belive is a OEM 6.0 unit Amazon has it for $155:
http://www.amazon.com/Dorman-918-216-Transmission-Oil-Cooler/dp/B00HEDJ7OG
Then there's the Tru-Cool Max LPD47391 for $138:
http://www.amazon.com/Tru-Cool-LPD4..._UL160_SR160,160_&refRID=1WQRR1XJZ3AHAHXYABHH

The Dorman is big at 34"X16.5"compared to the Tru-Cool at 22.75"X8.5" they are both 3/8" in/out. Bigger is better, right?
For those of you who are running a filter, which one did yougo with and how did you set it up?

TIA
Rich

Is there a reason you went with the Tru-Cool?

that's what was installed during a reman at the local trans shop for one truck and the other truck already had one installed when i bought the truck.

Long the maker of TruCool is a Ford supplier. TruCool Max is a 4R100 V10 cooler without the Ford brackets.
Long's quality is much better than Dorman. But for the price it isn't a bad deal.

The Dorman part should be set up for 1/2" lines. Seeing how it is for a 5R110 tranny

Thanks for the input guys, that all makes sense. I'm considering the Dorman. Pardon my ignorance but I don't pick up the new truck (my first diesel) until Saturday. What is the size of the cooler hose on my '90? is it 3/8 or 1/2? Amazon (not that they would know what their talking about) sells 1/2 to 3/8 adapter barbs and 12 ft. of 1/2 hose along with the Doorman. Is 12ft. enough? They also have the magnefine inline filters, good stuff? Or should I do a spin on? I live out in the boonies, so if I can get it all via prime, it's a no brainer. Amazon has a "Max Tow" brand temp gauge: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0095ZKA06?psc=1 I've always used AutoMeter or VDO, but my eyes aren't what they used to be and the digital read out would help. Any idea if the Max Tow is any good?

Best,
Rich

the e4od uses 5/16 lines from the factory.magnefine inline filters are good.12' of hose will be far more hose than needed.

Thanks. So I'll need a pair of 5/16 to 1/2 adapter barbs, correct? Approximately how much hose will do the job?

No, the line size is 3/8". At least it is on my 90 - 92 and 99.

If you use the Magnefine inline filter they need to be changed every 30,000 miles. If you do, then the bypass mod should be installed, can be purchased from Ford dealer. (See pic)
A stand alone filter is much better than the Magnefine.

You would do well to do a fluid change as quoted in the IDI Tech Articles. http://www.oilburners.net/forums/showthread.php?29296-Flushing-a-E4OD-or-4R100

Amazon has a "Max Tow" brand temp gauge: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0095ZKA06?psc=1
I don't see anything wrong with that temp gauge.
Install the sender in the pressure test port on the drivers side just forward of the shift lever.

Not knowing how your going to mount the gauges, any Auto parts store has the 3 gauge mounting bracket, some come with gauges.

Thanks all!

Thanks Bill! So I should be good with 12ft. of 1/2" hose and a couple of 3/8 - 1/2 adepters, correct? The PO did a tranny service 2000 mi ago, so unless someone tells me otherwise I think I'm good there. Can you please recommend a good stand alone kit? Or are the lines already there and I just need to plumb in a spin on housing? Thanks for the tip on the bypass mod. I know I'm a FNG, but I've been lurking on this and other diesel forums for quite awhile. In the past it was all theoretical entertainment but it just got real and I've got a bunch of catching up to do!
Thanks again for the help.

Best,
Rich

Longs Tru-Cool 40k is amazing...

Im running it with my built 4l80e in my 4bt Tahoe... When its close to 100F ambient, trans temp runs around 130-150. Hottest I've ever seen the trans since the build with using this cooler was 155 and that was ******* it on a hot day while pulling. I also have the radiator cooler in series to help it warm up in the winter. The 4l60e and stock external cooler would run 210-215 on hot days.

I would strongly suggest a thermostat for it though... I dont have one and during the winter on the interstate, it will sometimes unlock the converter because my trans controller has a minimum lock-up temp of 70F. A winter shield will help that though.. Lol

PIA Newbie...

Hey gang,
Can anyone answer my line size questions in post #10? PIA FNG! I know, I'm sorry but I really want to get this stuff ordered today. I'm super limited in the amount of time I have to get this truck sorted out before leaving on a road trip with a long heavy highway tow. I want to get it set up and get at least a few hundred local miles on it before departure...
All the help is much appreciated:hail:hail

89 to early 97 E4OD line size is 5/16" late 97-98 E4OD and all 4R100s are 3/8" line.

If you use a 6.oh cooler (Dorman) You will need to adapt from 5/16" line to 1/2" fittings on the cooler.

Image is a pressure bypass used on late 97-98 E4OD and all 4R100 trannys. With this set up you can run 3/8" lines.

Thanks guys!
I ordered the Dorman and 12ft. of 1/2 hose. I'll pick up some adepter barbs locally, there's a bunch of marine service shops close by. I take it running the bypass (thanks oldbull) is a good idea. Im shopping for a spin on tranny filter mount. What's the preferred orientation of the hoeses? Preferred filter? We're going to pick up the truck tomorrow! I can't wait to get it back and dig in!
Thanks again gents!
