Hello my wife is getting back in to training horses and selling them again, and I am trying to figure out which truck is the best to use to pull at the max a three horse trailer and is know for reliability. I Know I am wanting a newer than 1999 F250-F350. I have heard bad things about the 6.0 and 7.3 but have not heard much on the 6.4 (Don't think I could afford that new of a truck anyways) I am looking to spend under 20 grand for the truck. My question is basically which off the motors and year of truck is a good choice to get. Also what type of gearing would be good for pulling a trailer. The furthest trip we would be doing is about 800 miles from Va to MI. If any would could give there input it would be greatly appreciated.

IMO, stick with a 7.3L Powerstroke for reliability. The newer they are the more power they make.

Go with an OBS F350 if you value having a serviceable D60 front axle.

If youre looking at 99+ then you are looking specifically at the Super Duty models. if you want to stay with the 7.3L then look for a clean low mile 03 with a 7.3, both the 7.3 and 6.0 were available in 03 so pay attention. If you want to fool around under the hood a little bit then look for a 2000 model year or earlier as after that they came with PMR rods which were known to bend, break and cause holes to happen in blocks above 400 hp (which is a lot) but by all means dont be afraid of a clean used 05-06-07 model year with the 6.0L. You can find them all day long in the $20K range, run the OASIS report on it, see what if anything has been done warranty wise and purchase accordingly. Contrary to popular belief, the 6L is a good engine.

Nothing wrong with the 7.3 It is basickly bullet proof. Just not the most powerful truck on the road. For towing 4:10 gears would be optimal

The 6.0 can be quite problematic. But has gobs of power

The 6.4 has its own problems

I am a fleet manager for a government agency, we have several 6.0's a couple 7.3's and my company daily driver is a 6.4.

The 6.0's are fairly reliable with a few problems here and there.

The 7.3's aren't as powerful, but COMPLETELY reliable.

The 6.4 is an absolute MONSTER but it has already had 3 reprograms, 4 radiators and is ready for it's 5th and it only has 17K on it......

Short story, when it came time for me to buy one with my cash, I bought a 7.3!

I've owned both 7.3L power strokes OBS and 99+, both had about 140K on them and ran great. No problems other then maintenance items.
My dad had an 04 6.0L w/ less then 18K numerous injector problems and tranny problems. Also had an 06 6.0L w/ less then 45K on it about 4 EGR valves. Not to mention the 7.3L got better fuel mileage.

I would get a 99+ 7.3L and get a tuner, exhaust and intake.

The main pro's of the F350 4x4 OBS (in my opinion)
- *real* Dana 60 front axle
- *normal* bolt-pattern wheels (handy if you have other brands of 8-lug trucks)
- price

The 99+ has the edge on power, transmission, brakes, and probably a number of other things.

I would agree with Mike. The 6.0L is a good engine, and stock they will work very hard and pull well. I was at the Fuel Pump and the guy that was across from me and I were talking, He has a 7.3 SD and I have the 6.0 Ex. I asked if he was running stock or had it turned up.... he said he had it turned up, and that he drove it on the "tow" setting all the time bacause it got better mileage.... he thought the "tow" setting bumped it up 30 or 40 hp and "Extreme" was 90 or 100hp..... so..... if he was happy with the performance on tow and it was lets call it in the middle, 35 hp, I believe the stock 7.3 was somewhere around 235hp, so that put him at 270hp.... a stock 6.0, at least my 03 model year is 325hp stock....... so at that point you are already 55hp above a "turned up" 7.3. I love my 6.0 and would buy another vehicle with the 6.0.

Also, argve on this board loves to turn up the power on his trucks..... he had an IDI (the Enterprise) and a 95 Dodge that was up around 500hp. He has driven my truck and said he sees no reason to turn it up...... so someone who thinks more is better, thinks the 6.0 is already pretty much there.....

So I would say, look at the truck you want, and what you want to spend.... an OBS, a 7.3 or 6.0 PSD SD would all allow for a reliable truck and in the pricerange you are looking for. The SD's have more "creature comforts" and the cab is bigger and has more room in it, and the SD's have 4 wheel Disk Brakes... the OBS does not.... these are all something to consider......

OBS 7.3 are 215hp
early 99 SD 7.3 250hp
late 99-03 SD 7.3 w auto 250hp
late 99-03 SD 7.3 w stick 275hp
03-04 SD 6.0 325hp
05-07 SD 6.0 SUPPOSEDLY 335hp but not in my book, i think 300hp(think ford detuned them for reliablity)
08-10 SD 6.4 350hp
