I thought about this as well, and called our courthouse, they had a "inspector" from Des Moines called back.
To boil it all down the "legal" way makes sure they can trace your parts, or cab, to make sure the new parts aren't stolen. Like a damaged & repaired vehicle needs to be inspected usually by a local law enforcement person who has been appointed to such things.
This means bills of sales, if your buying an entire vehicle a useable title,etc.
At the end of it all it didn't sound like there was a hefty fee, just the normal stuff. But do your homework, for the legal way,
